Terrible Breeder/Abuse

So here is the story, I was online looking at of course BIRDS in my local area. I was just glancing around to pass the time away, I am in no way looking to get another one quite so soon. But I came across an ad saying there are 2 eclectus babies (2 weeks old) for sale to "experienced" hand feeders for $750!! I am so outraged, there were photos of chicks that didn't even have feathers and were blind from being too young. It also says "I always have eclectus babies if anyone wants them." How outrageous!!

So I called animal control complaining about this situation and placed a report. However, I have had plenty of experience with animal control in Los Angeles, and I can tell you that they don't have much authority. Animals are viewed as property and profit, it just disgusts me. How can someone be so cruel? I will never understand, but what matters most is how to resolve this situation. If anyone has any additional advice to give, please let me know.

Thats pretty common the world over
I wouldn't call it animal abuse... but its not an ideal situation. Ideally the breeder would have someone they are familiar with who handrears their babies. But you never know, this breeder may be wanting to find someone to do just that. Its customary for the handrearer to buy the babies (well at least in our country) from the breeder. Thats how I used to do it Then I would find homes for the bubs.

I must admit, I, too, cringe when seeing ads like this. They make me utterly sad.

Brokers, however, jump at those opportunities, as they will make somewhat of a profit.

I have never, and never will, buy a bird from a broker. (Not that I'm ever going to be in the market for an addition here :32: )

Pets in every state are classified as property.

The ad says "taking a deposit" so they might not be selling them that young, maybe they just want to get some buyers lined up for when they are ready to be sold. Then again you could be right and they are just awful, evil breeders.

I hate that their considered property to an extent. I like that we can legally put them in our name which helps if they are stolen or lost. But other than that I can't stand that they're not treated like living things with feelings and needs. I hate that if some one kiills your pet or is abusing an animal that little to no action is taken ever. I think to be able to wean/hand feed an animal you should require a certificate, license, something that way selling animals at a young age isn't dangerous because they can only end up in the right hands.

But having them as property also protects them. Animals will NEVER have the same rights as humans, in the eyes of the law or society.
If someone damages your property, you get there are consequences! You just need to get over the emotional side and use the fact they are property to your advantage. I ALWAYS keep this in mind when I have animals. I ensure that anything I do, the fact they are my property can protect them.
I also think there should be handrearing qualifications!
