Ok i hope some one can help me on here, it started getting cold in california and i want to turn on the heater but im not sure was a good temperature that wont bother or hurt my parrots, is my 1st time using the heater on the house bc we just moved to this house we use to live in a smaller house and only used the portable ones wich it wasnt as hot as this one, any body knows wath would be a good temperature? Or should i close the vent in their room and just cover them??? Any help i would apreciate it thankz :blue1:Pe

The bird can handle most temperature but not draw or dry air. They are not so sensitive at all.
I think that between 22-24º C (71,6-75,2º F)is a good parrot indoor temperature. And after bath and when they are tired some degree more. I have 26º C (78,8º F) in my bathroom and Eloy loves to sit there when he is tired.

In the fall/winter we keep our nighttime temperature in the house at 68 degrees, and during the day at 70 degrees. :)

My Macs cage is near a vent, and I closed that vent completely as I don't want him subjected to the forced heat in such close proximity.

Mine get their baths mid mornings, and I don't up the temperature at all.

My birds are used to temperatures as low as the 50's F in the winter and up to the high 80's in summer.

If you allow your birds to adjust, they can withstand quite a temperature range, and being that they have down feathers, they can insulate themselves a lot easier than we can!

Yup, I tried to shower Eli for the first time, but she diiiiidn't like the water at all :p Then I also tried to spray her, but after a while she panicked when she saw the spray bottle .__. So that's it, now I am going to try and put a big bowl of water next to her and see if she tries something on her own :)

To be honest, Niko HATED to be bathed in the beginning. He was 4 months when I brought him home, and the breeder never showered or sprayed him before.

I took it slow with him in the beginning when it was bath time. I had him watch how I gave my Amazons a bath. (During the winter I use a spray bottle filled with warm water and set it on fine mist). I bathe my fids twice a week, and Niko eventually "tolerated" it. There are even times when he goes crazy over bath time, where he can't get enough of it. I turn the event into party time. I turn on some nice music, sing along, get him all excited, and that usually does the trick.

Now summer is an entirely different story. I bathe them all outside, under the hose with mist setting. Niko can never get enough of it. :)

You need to make the bird wanting to bath. That's more imported than how.
Things that are working is recorded sounds from rain in the rainforest. Make it windy, use a fan or hairdryer. The vacuum-cleaner is also something that make them want to bath.

To take a shower with the bird is also one thing you can try.
And never give up! Their bath is so important. :)

My Blue & Gold Kayko will start splashing around in his water dish and makes a strange warbling sound. Clifford the Scarlet will hear this, make the same sound and begin splashing around in his dish, making a big mess all over the floor. This is always morning. When I see them doing this I figure they know better than me when bath time is, so I make the shower temp a pleasant warm and hold my arm out into the shower. Kayko really loves his shower, Clifford is less thrilled, and Doogie is NOT thrilled. I guess every bird is different. In the summertime I clean the cages with the birds in them and mist them with the hose and let them dry in the sun just enough that they are dry (it gets very hot here) I never give showers at anything but morning and will even heat their birdroom extra warm with an electric heater in winter to help them dry faster. They have a large tree branch going across their room that they get up on and party all day; it is warmer up near the ceiling. Their room is never lower than 68 and can be as high as 82

Today i force her to shower again :( i hate it doint it bc i feel like she hates me for those moments im spraying her :'(

I put her on her stand take her outside when sunny in the morning, let her relax there for a while, wily talking to her, than star spraying her, she stars screaming ALL MAD and trys to get away by climing down the stand.. She look funny trying to get away from me, all of the rest of my flock take showers by them selves they love it and i love watching them, i just cant understand why my macaw dont like it or does it by her self, maybe is the previous ownera fault, i have to admit they disnt know take good care of her, she was plucking and her nails were SUPER LONG when i got her, her tail feathers were really ugly too but shes doing better specyallu with her new diet she has, she hates veggies tho :( but im still trying different things :) and i will keep on trying till i get wath i want and wath i know is best for her :)

Eloy, my birds hate the vacum, they get so scare of it that they star shaking so that wouldnt encorage her to bathe :(
I dont want to try the shower perch yeah cause she doesnt even like the mist

The only way my grey will tolerate a shower is if I take him in with me and hes on my shoulder... I cant just sit him on my arm and spray him, that would be to easy

Please don't force him to bathe... it may only make him not want to bathe in the future. Here's a list that you could try...

  • Try luke-warm water
  • Try cold water
  • Try ice-cold water
  • Try a spray bottle
  • Try a plant mister
  • Try in the sink with the water running or just some water in the bottom
  • Try in the sink with the sprayer
  • Try in the tub with some water in the bottom
  • Try a casserole dish or similar with some water
  • Try the dish with ice
  • Try the dish with foot toys
  • Try the dish with some leafy greens like endive or other types of lettuces that may create a "natural" bowl
  • Try the dish with a vacuum cleaner
  • Try in the shower with you - watching you having a blast getting wet!
  • Try dancing the bird into the shower with the water already going
  • Try spritzing yourself, and have fun doing it! Then spritz the bird
  • Try outside in an empty cage large enough to spread wings during a nice rain shower
  • Try outside in an empty cage using the hose with a mist/shower attachment

Sometimes, monkey see, monkey do. Give a bird a bath who loves it and allow the one who hates it to watch, but don't make that one participate. Over time, the one who hates it may become curious and want to join in as well.

The point is, you need to make the experience enjoyable! However the bird wants to bathe, make it fun!

Also in the meantime while he is getting adjusted. My vet said just the steam from the shower is helpful for them.

Bosley really only enjoys a shower every 2-3 weeks, full display opening wings etc.
The rest of the time he will tolerate a misting but makes it very clear when he doesn't want any more, I respect his wishes.
