So I bought a African grey that was not banded but I fell inlove wit him and bought him anyway I love him to pieces and I was told he was only 7 months when I brought him to a very reputable Breeder to get his nails trimmed and he said he thinks he’s 3 to 5 years old which is fine I still love him the same but my question is he says hello since we got him about 3 months ago and I figured more words would come in time thinking he is still only 7 months but if he is actually 3-5 years old is he goin to learn any more words I know your not supposed to buy a bird for his talking abilities and I love him no matter what but would love for him to talk more

Truth is only time will tell. Even among African grays speech is not guaranteed. Not every bird will speak, which is why we always tell people who come here looking for advice on “what bird is right for me” that speaking should not be an important factor for selecting what kind of bird do you want to get.

It’s only been three months, he may still be settling in and there may still be potential for more words.

You can stack the deck in your favor by constantly rewarding whenever he says Hello. This will teach him that mimicry gets rewarded, which may open him up to more speech.

But there are no guarantees. He may never say anything more than hello

Chris is right. You can also practise with him. Keep saying a word regularly. I say all the words Xander knows then add a new one. He says it in his own silly way but after a few days he gets it and then i praise the heck out of him everytime he says his new word

Buzz came to us at 18. He was unusual in that he took to us like he had always lived here and adjusted immediately. That said he didn't say any words for about 3 months. It was about 10 months before he started saying new things. While he talks well he still prefers to make and imitate sounds. One of his favorite games is to make a sound and I try to copy him. He then makes another and I try again. He gets more elaborate every time and will do this for 30+ minutes. I'm a bad whistler but have gotten better! While there is no way to say how much your CAG will talk, the more interaction he has with you the more he is likely to vocalize in whatever way he's able. For us we have tried to teach Buzz words but they are not the ones he has learned. We have successfully taught him some songbird sounds.

i guess i got real lucky in this dept as both of mine speak and Max don't shut up at times, lol some i have taught him but now he is off into his own stuff and picks up what he wants from around the house and off the TV where Lily pretty much just speaks what i have taught her, just now starting to pick up on Max's talk i noticed the last week or so.
Max is a funny fella,as he pretty much chats himself to sleep.
one thing that is common between both is the talk mainly only comes when they are in their cages, when out they don't talk at all.
