Ok, so in my last three trips to Walmart I have seen 2 dogs. In carts. I have been considering taking Flick with me when I go next time, because I know she would LOVE it. She already goes to pet stores and on walks with me, and it seems like here there may be a bit of a more relaxed attitude toward pets in stores.

Have any of you ever taken a bird into a place that you wouldnt assume dogs would go? Have you ever been asked to leave? I do not like breaking rules, even by accident, and the idea of being asked to leave is upsetting. But a bird, on a leash, on a shoulder, surely that is better than a dog in a shopping cart?

Walmart always kicked me out...

Hhhm, I see. I do not want to be kicked out. Any other places you take your birds that you dont typically see dogs in?

I was shocked to see a medium sized dog in the grocery store once. Large enough it was walking on a leash, not carried. Clearly NOT a service dog. Maybe no one had the guts to ask her to leave, or management didn't see.

I used to bring Kiwi with me to convenience stores like walmart and various corner stores. No one ever said anything. She liked to hide in my hair though, so most of the time people didn't see her unless she was making noise ;)

You might get some attention about it, but if people are bringing their dogs in carts I doubt they'd make a fuss over a bird. (I also took my beardie with me everywhere on my shoulder. No one said anything about her, either)

I thought the only animals aloud into places that sell food are service animals...

Used to be, and IMHO should be, but it is so relaxed these days.
I think when the small dogs being carried around in purses became popular, it opened up the whole "can of worms". How do you discriminate what is okay vs what is too big? Could you imagine the discrimination lawsuits and fighting?!

The walmart here barely sells food, and not out in the open like a super walmart. I just know that Flick loves stores, and I would like to be able to take her on errands and stuff.

I've taken Kiwi into stores that do not sell food, and always ask if he's ok. I have never had anyone say no, but it's always better to be polite. The folks at the hardware store love seeing him, and the people at the postal annex ask where he is when he's not with me. Just a *personal* thing, but I don't like when I see (non-service) dogs in grocery stores or restaurants. So I try to extend the same corteousy of not bringing Kiwi into places around food where someone who was unfamiliar or bothered by birds even if it is ok by the owners/manager:)

I think theres a stigma about birds being dirty
I take my macaw out with me 2-3 times a month when im running around but never to walmart I think that may be pushing it a lil bit lol
but gas station thirft store pet store ect no problem
but be ready to talk because people will talk your ear off I know they do mine
half the time I don't take max with me is because I just do want all the talking
:blue1:

Maybe I will try testing the waters at smaller stores.

It didn't occur to me before to try it at convenience stores because I live on an army post. No way it would fly at the gas stations there!
