Introducing Piña and Colada... My handreared pair of pineapple GCC.
Now... I know I said I didn't want more than one bird. And I know I said I couldn't bear to have another GCC so soon after my beloved Kermit passed (its only been about 8 months)... but here I am, with not one, but TWO GCC. And I don't regret it one bit.
Piña is the male, he is a lot more reserved than Colada and seems to have been handreared some time ago and then ignored. He is more like a friendly parent reared bird. He will only sit on me if Colada is as well. He will come around after a while
Colada... well. What to say about her... I almost didn't bring her home. Why? She is the bitiest bird I have ever met. She is very assertive and a bit of a bully really! She has Piña wrapped around her little toe... to the point she wont let him near the food bowl (easily solved with two food bowls on opposite sides of the cage).
At the breeders house I walked in the door and she showed me the only two she had left... one normal sized and aloof boy (Piña) and one tiny fragile looking little lady bird who refused to go to the breeder. As she is pulling her out she warns me that there have been a lot of people through today looking at them and the female conure probably wasn't in the mood for anyone. Well little miss bold took one look at me and flew over... I put my hand out and she landed on it. The breeder was stunned, apparently Colada had not been interested in meeting anyone, but she seemed to have instantly claimed me LOL
Colada looked at me with her funny beady conure eyes and then put her beak to my hand... I assumed it was to mouth me like a typical conure baby... then suddenly she was drawing blood! :52: She grabbed skin on my finger and was slicing it with her beak I flipped my hand a bit to unsteady her and she stopped... only to look at me again and choose a new spot near my wrist (which is nicely bruised and swollen thank you very much Colada!). We continued this process for a long while until I put her back on the cage and told the breeder I couldn't take her, my family wasn't prepared for a problem bird.
Colada looked at me again and flew over to my neck and nuzzled in. I grabbed her the way I used to grab my Kermit (not something I would normally do with a strange bird) and she flopped conure style in my hand :11:
Then it all made sense... she wasn't an aggressive bird, just an assertive bird testing her boundries. I patted her and smooshed her up and she loved it. I placed her back on my arm and watched her like a hawk, the second she went to put her beak to my skin I tipped my arm to unsettle her and she would stop and give me a meaningful look. I chatted with the breeder a bit more about birds in general and by the time she was putting Piña in the travel box Colada and I had come to an understanding. :smile015:
I knew she would end up in a home that didn't understand... or in a pet shop where she would just end up getting worse. I knew no one would take her knowing how bitey she was... and well I was prepared to deal with some broken skin to be blessed with such an outgoing inquisitive bird.
Piña doesn't mind either, being a much more reserved and aloof bird he doesn't mind having a pushy female around. So I put her in the box too... when I got her home, I wondered what I had done. I wondered if I had made a mistake. But now I am confident I made the right choice
We are planning on getting a third larger species down the track when we own our own property. So out the window goes the idea of one bird LOL
"What IS this stuff!" - Piña and Colada wondering what the heck the berries and banana in their bowl is... they were used to only peas and corn and cockatiel mix from the breeders place!
There's already a mess LOL
