I will be getting a TAG soon and I have question All I hear about are all the downsides to getting a tag instead of a Congo but what are the upsides to getting a TAG aside from the size difference.

OK, I'll bite; What got you to choose a TAG even after hearing all of the downsides of owning a TAG? You had to have something on the positive side to make this choice, yes? So, what drove your choice?

Just to add confusion to all of this; I hear that henpecked in back and that he has 'several' Adult Amazons he is looking to place!

I've had 4 TAGs over the years but never a CAG. My impression is they are very similar, though the CAG is visually far more impressive. Not aware of the perceived or factual disadvantages of the TAG.....

TAGS are reported to mature sooner, otherwise the differences are in size and color of tail only, no?

Maturing sooner might help with bonding and becoming comfortable sooner and probalby speaking a tad sooner.

I choose get a TAG because I know a breeder and they are much cheaper than CAGs I also met a really sweet TAG at a rescue and that kinda drove my choice. I talked to a couple people in real life who own pet store and breed and they said that the only difference between a TAG and CAG are that TAGs are smaller have a smaller vocabulary and are not as smart(which I don't agree with) Also I'm still considering an Amazon but I can't get in touch with henpecked because his inbox is full.

My guy has been a blast to be around so far. He's still young, so no vocabulary yet. But he's pretty vocal so far. My little guy has been awesome. No 'downsides' yet.

I think TAGs are beautiful birds. Maybe dull at a quick glance, but when you really look, I love the contrasting very dark gray and white, maroon tail, and rosy upper mandible :).

Less intimidating to look in the eye too lol. I admit that the CAG can make me feel transparent... I'm convinced they can look you up and down a couple times and have you all figured out :D!

Myself, I actually think TAGs are the prettier of the two.

I think they are good looking birds as well, but I've never seen a maroon hue to one's tail.
IMO this is a good side by side pic of a TAG (left) and

I had a TAG for 27 years, never a CAG..and to me she was the perfect little grey bird. VERY talkative and smart..moody at times..when she passed away I was actually looking to get a baby..yes price wise they are cheaper but I believe personality wise they are the same.

Tags aren't as phobic as cags

I have a 29 year old Congo African grey. He's very phobic. Of everything. Perches, toys, food. Seeing items for weeks won't lessen his panic when they're near him or the cage. I've heard from Timneh owners that they're less phobic and neurotic (as in plucking and obsessive behaviors). I've never personally owned one, though, so I can't say for sure.

The size difference can go either way. I do think a Congo is more visually impressive. Their eyes are gorgeous (and a good indicator of mood). Very intelligent. I'm not sure of a Timneh's intelligence but I would imagine not too different. They are on the smarter spectrum either way.
