I wanted to get the information out asap so Im keeping it as brief as possible, I got a show tomorrow so Im really occupied.
Last night, I was feeding my Alexandrine baby ( 1month and 10 days old) when he swallowed the whole feeding tube. He was really hungry so he plucked the feeding tube out from the front of the feeding syringe and swallowed it whole.
That tube went right in his crop and I had to take him to the vet. Yes, i panicked and when I was standing in his office, I realized I have no shoes on. Doctor told me I got there just on time and Im lucky it didn't move further away from the crop. He also told me that its very common ( the reason I wanted to share it with others).
What to do when something like that happens?
Do NOT panic. You might panic the bird and he might push it more deeper.
Do NOT try to get the thing out yourself. It might move it further away.
Do NOT feed him anything.
Do NOT use any clippers or anything to try to get it out. Do NOT put anything in his mouth.
Do NOT shake the bird, try to keep it as stable as possible.
Gently hold the parrot upside down and rush him to the vet.
if he pukes, let him. Most of the times, parrot just pukes it out himself.
If there is no vet or you cant get to the hospital for some reason, as a last resort, hold the parrot upside down (get someone to hold em for you) and try to feel the thing through his crop. when you find it, gently push it forward with your fingers. your bird might gag but thats natural. Keep pushing it until you feel that thing can be taken out through his mouth with fingers. Keep in mind that even if you have removed the thing, you still need to take him the vet asap.
i hope you never need to use this information.
