Sunny got cuts on her face at the vet. Is that normal like they said it is?

UPDATE:

I did hear from the vet yesterday. I live in the sticks, so of course my phone didn't go off, and when I did find out I had a call, the voicemail didn't work until I was in town (ugh). She left a long message apologizing and saying that their tech always handles the birds and is very experienced and that she personally (the vet) didn't see any mishandling or roughness while they were holding Sunny. She said they hold the bird with a finger on either side of their head. Sunny was toweled and was chewing on the towel, which the vet said might have caused the damage to her cheeks because of the jaw movement against the tech's fingers. She also said Sunny was calm after they toweled her, which makes it seem weird that they would need to grip her hard enough to cut into her cheeks with their fingers? The vet offered cream for Sunny's face and told me she could look at her again, but I'm truthfully not interested in having Sunny go back, ever.

I am glad the vet apologized and admitted there was swelling that was more than just blushing, and more than what "usually occurs", but I don't feel particularly reassured about the vet office, considering their best tech cut Sunny's face. It just doesn't seem like someone that experienced should have that much trouble holding a large parrot, which they do all the time.

I do plan, at the very least, leaving reviews online to explain what happened so anyone taking a parrot there knows that it happened. There aren't many CAVs here, so I'm sure a lot of people take their birds to that vet clinic. I also saved the voicemail from yesterday in case anything else comes of it.

I'm sad that it happened, but I feel like I know next time what I'm going to do to make sure things go right. I'm also going to work with Sunny and see if I can't get to the point where I can hold her or train her to be held during any kind of exam. It will take a lot of work, but I know I can at least get her more comfortable with being handled.

That looks horrible! Poor Sunny! I have to admit that if that happened to my little guy I'd be extremely upset. Have you considered calling a different avian vet's office and asking if such things happen with scared birds? I would be tempted to switch avian vets, if I had other choices.

I will say that both of the times my little guy went to the avian vet (he's less than 1 year old) he seemed very psychologically shaken for a while (literally shaking after a blood test), though he he didn't have any injuries because of them.

I actually talked to a couple of different people, and my vet tech friend is also going to ask a specialist she knows who works with raptors and sometimes large parrots, as that's all she does and she would probably know best. The other vet I talked to doesn't work with birds generally, but said that occasionally they can get a little bruising because of how soft that part of their face is. She didn't say anything about cuts though, and said I should ask a specialist.

Poor little guy! Blood tests are hard for even people, so I imagine it's even worse for a parrot who is scared. It's not like they have a lot of tissue under the skin either, so it's probably painful doing it so close to the bones. Parrots all seem to get stressed by change pretty easily, so it makes sense that yours got pretty upset :( That was definitely the case with Sunny. It's been three days I think, and she's just now wanting to come off the perch for a few minutes. Usually she sits with me for hours. She'll get back to before though, it will just take time.

I know this is and 'old' post, but was wondering if you could/would give an update?

I was *so* shocked seeing that photo!

My Sunny - let call her SunnyNL to make it less confusing - got some bruising on her face the last visit at the CAV, I assumed it was from the anaesthesia (mask?cabin?).
Nowhere as bad as yours!
But she had/has these superpainfull wings- so toweling was indeed torture to her!
No wonder she fought to get away/ it made me feel awfull, but there was no other option available- I'd only had her less than 48 hours and was figuring out what was wrong with her.
She needs to go in next month for check-ups and retesting/bloodwork and frankly I am a bit anxious about it. (She wil need another round of sleepygas)

but ... far more important: how have you guys been?
Did she fully recover (not just the face, your bond as well) ?
Did you switch to another vet?
.
