My conure loves, I mean LOVES, sunflower seeds, but frankly they are expensive to purchase at a pet store. Does anyone know if sunflower seeds sold for wild bird food are safe for our more domestic friends? What about sunflower seeds for human consumption? Any advice would be great.

I only buy seed mixes at the pet store that I know are safe for parrots.
My birds only get seed once a week and yep, they love those sunflower seeds too.

No sunflower seeds.

My conure doesn't get sunflower seeds because they have an addictive quality to birds (birdie crack) She gets safflower seeds in her food.... Human sunflower seeds have salt and are cooked in oils so they're not safe for birds to my knowledge. Wild bird seed is bad for domestic birds too (I can't remember why, but I remember being told numerous times to NEVER feed Lucy wild bird seed)
Edit// Kitt is right too, stick with seeds sold specifically for parrots.

I know when I take seed completely out of Leroys diet when he is acting like Lucifer then he settles down....birds can easily become seed junkies and it just isn't good for them.

Birdie Crack....ROFLMAO...I spit pepsi on my computer over that one....pepsi is my crack...LOL

I have a pepsi on my desk right now... doughnut stick and a pepsi, breakfast of champions lol

Sunflower seeds are very very fatty. Thats why your bird loves them. He shouldnt have any.

None of us should have pepsi :p One or two isn't terrible

WHAT?????None of us should have pepsi.????? OMG...I could never give up my pepsi...LOL Believe me I have tried, I don't drink, I don't smoke but my addiction is pepsi......some days, I wish I never would have started drinking it. Unfortunately where I work, there is a fountain pepsi machine right there. It's little hard to ignore. LOL

Sunflower seeds aren't bad if given as a treat. I buy my seeds at the grocery store, they sell them in a you fill section. You just have to make sure they aren't salted.

We liken sunflower seeds to eating french fries. Of course you do not want to give up your french fries. Try the healthier seeds such as pumpkin or sesame or hemp.
Of course you bird will go through withdrawal syndrome and get the shakes. (just kidding)

I bought a bunch of sunflower seeds when I got Bob to give as treats; he won't eat them - silly bird.
