Sun Conure Progress & Molting

Mine is picky too, but she loves her pellets and seeds. She loves fruit and is just learning to eat veggies. If your mom's birdie has "cleavage" then yes, he may be overweight.

Yeah, both her birds have a bit of the "cleavage" thing going on (I think it's too much seed in their diet and not enough exercise).
I read that birds can have a natural part in their feathers (genetic) that makes them look overweight when they're not. Since we both read that 120 grams was fine we thought he would be okay, but maybe he is overweight.

I'm guilty of spoiling her with fruits and little snacks, but I don't think 104 grams is borderine overweight for almost 6 months...is it?

104 grams is nothing compared to Erik's weight, :p so don't worry.

Haha well thanks

Are you referring to the earlier posts?

Well, I still have people telling me she is a jenday because she's got blue tail feathers and blue ends on her wings, but her body is slowly becoming more yellow, and her back is totally speckled with yellow as well. I have also been told she could be a sunjay hybrid? I really don't know. This is her lately:

She has also learned to imitate my kissing sounds, as well as "step up", which she constantly repeats when I enforce it when she bites! She's more keen to bathing, but still refuses to eat veggies (except peas and sometimes corn -- she hates carrots.)

As far as molting goes, being that young it may be its first time I'm guessing, and its something completely new to her, as far as easing it through, I'd say a reasonable amount of space in that aspect, or at least no petting near the pin feathers, or at least ease into the process of helping her prune if she allows it soon enough!

From what I've read, Sun Conures don't fully mature in to their adult plumage (coloring) until about 5 years of age. They can vary in shades of yellow and orange, they keep some green and definitely have blue, too. Jendays have fully green shoulders and wings, whereas Sun Conures have the yellow. Hybrids I've read usually remain speckled (how the Sun Conure looks until matured.)

Also, I felt that I should add that all of the moodiness during all of the molting your baby is going through now and for the first 5 years is like a prelude for the upcoming sexual maturing stage your baby will go through around 5 to 6 years old. During that time you will experience your bird likely at its worst. That is the time most parrot owners give up their parrot pets, unfortunately, and it's the time that parrot parents who endure and maintain their training are rewarded with a fully mature and calmer baby... well, adult baby, by then. It would be very wise to do some research on that stage so that you can be fully prepared... and so you fall under the parrot parent category rather than the parrot owner category.

Skittles was 1y,2wks old when I got him and he had all his adult colors. Everything I've read says they begin their feather color change at about 6mos old and by the age of 12-18mos have ALL their adult colors. The hue may change over the years, but not the actually color (as in a color won't change from green to orange at 5y/o).

Skittles primaries and tail feathers are an olive green with deep blue tips. So that has nothing to do with whether its a sun or jenday. Your sun is approaching six months so its still too early to know for sure, but if his wings stay that green after one year of age its not a sun. Jendays have a LOT of green on their wings, suns do not. Suns have either yellow or orange (or mix) wings (with SOME green) but not that much. If I were to guess, I'd say thats a sun, but its WAAAY to early to know for sure. Just keep an eye on the wing colors.

Pipa is now 4 years old, almost 5 (in 3 months!) and Bettie hasn't been on here for a couple of years now...
