Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
Looking at cages (to upgrade) and of those I can afford, the one I like best has 1" spacing. It Says it's a good cage for Conures, but is 1" really close enough for a little (6-month old) Conure?

I would go no bigger than 3/4” for a sun - 1” is definitely too wide of spacing. Mine are 5/8 which feels about right for them.

Thank you so much for the advice! I will remove that particular cage from my consideration.

For a young sunny, you don't want to go any wider than 5/8". Skittles cage is 3/4" but he's a full grown sunny AND is on the bigger side (as far as size goes). I would DEFINITELY NOT go any wider than that for him. Bear in mind their heads are NOT as big/wide as they appear. The feathers make them look bigger than they are so that should not be a guide in any case.

The thing with bar spacing is that smaller spacing is better than larger (as long as its not so small they could get their feet caught.

Also, bear in mind that not all conures are the same size so when it says "good for conures" thats really a wide generalization that should be taken with a grain of salt. Some conures are on the smaller side (green cheeks) and some are on the larger side (rickeybirds). A tropical terror, oops, I mean sun conure cage would lie somewhere in the middle.
