Suggestion for newbie

Welcome to the forum :D

lol for that we need to know your schedule, living situation(apartment/house/roomates), your noise tolerance, what other companion animals you have, types of birds you may already be interested in, if you have any bird experience already, and anything else you may feel is relevant.

Decide if you're really ready for a bird, they are life long companions who shouldn't be compared with pets. Parrots are not domesticated, they are wild and have the same instincts as their wild cousins. They require high quality pellets, as well as fresh and prepared foods daily.

Hi Jennifer - welcome to the parrot forums. I guess nobody can just tell you what kind of parrot you should have, and a lot depends on what kind of commitment you are going to make - some parrots live longer than humans, even a lovebird and parrotlet can live to about 25 years or so, and there is a lot of education involved, such a proper environment, diet, do you have an avian vet in your area, and some birds are very expensive, an investment, and if is going to be in a cage, the bigger the cage, the better. So there really is a lot to think about.

To make that decision it would be up to you and the bird the picks you. It's best to go out and visit some birds and see what draws you in and then ask questions about the specific bird that catches your attention then we can go from there letting you know what that bird is like and such. :)

Mikey made the point I would have made... you may do your research and pick out your 'dream' bird and then when you are in a situation where you are meeting birds for adoption, be it pet store or a rescue, you may be surprised what bird picks you out. I love the eclectus, really thought when I made the decision to get my 'own' bird (my daughter has birds in the home), I really expected it would be an eclectus that we adopted. But totally without planning on adding a bird that weekend, a bare eyed cockatoo picked my husband out. She was almost 4 and up for adoption... in no way shape or form would I ever have thought we'd have a cockatoo of any size / type. But Ivory decided we were the right family for her and the rest is becoming history!

Others have great questions for you... where are you at in life? Are you home most of the time? Student? Working full time? At a point where you are looking forward to doing lots of traveling in the next few years? I have posted in another thread that while we love our little cockatoo, I'm not sure I would ever suggest or recommend them to anyone thinking of adopting, especially for a first bird. She is like having a toddler in your home, but this toddler will never grow up, she's that way for the next 50 years.

Share your story and I know there are lots of wonderful people here will be happy to provide all types of advice and their experiences!
