Struggling to find my lost budgie :(

It's been 3 days since my budgie flew away from my home. He initially was in a tree nearby but later on disappeared.

I've been putting up missing posters, placing his cage outside, reporting a missing bird to the local vets and communities, going around the area calling his name, playing bird noises and his favourite song. But still no luck... I think he may have either not heard me because he is high up (the trees in my area are really tall), is not in the places i've searched or worst case scenario already dead from starvation or predators. I'm not sure if I just need to look harder or I'm doing something wrong.

How far do lost birds tend to fly? I've looked within a ~ 600m radius of where he was last seen. I haven't looked everywhere nearby though because there are just too many places and some land is private. Would he continue to fly farther due to no sense of direction or try to circle around the area? How often would they move from one place to another?

Apparently pet birds will fly to people when they're hungry but so far nobody has found a lost budgie that I know of. Will this always be the case? My budgie isn't entirely tame and is quite cautious of unfamiliar things and people, will he rather starve than ask for help from people?

I've only been calling up trees because I think my budgie feels safe in high places and green leaves. What other places could a lost bird be most likely found? (fields, buildings, etc.) Would they tend to stay around greenish, quiet places or buildings and roads with many people nearby? Would they be in places with lots of birds or far away from them?

What other methods are there to increase the chances of getting budgies back?

When do you know that it is time to give up? I feel exhausted and disappointed every time I go looking for him, but I'm also very worried and really miss him. Please give me some advice I don't want to come to the point where I have to call it quits.

Hi @skypie739, I'm so sorry to learn that your little one hasn't been returned to you yet. Escaped birds can end up quite a ways away sometimes, one of my cockatiels is an escapee from what appears to have been a loving home judging by his condition when we found him in our yard. He was being chased by some rather territorial local birds and could've come from many miles away. He was VERY hungry by the time he arrived here so his hunger overrode any fear he may have had either of those birds or me, so he was pretty easy to catch. Despite looking for his original home for several weeks we got no response so he lives with us now, and the same may very well happen with your budgie.

Have you listed him on the Parrot Alert 911 website, or checked it for "found" birds in your area yet? I'll link it here again just in case ...

Hopefully some other members will have some more advice for you, and I wish you all the very best of luck finding him 🙏🙏🙏

I have gone through the same thing that you have experienced. A budgie too. My advice is to try going on other forums and trying. An example would be talkbudgies, and I hope you find your bird. As for calling it quits. A winter too cold. Wishing you luck.

Have you found your budgie yet?

Sorry for seeing this so very late!

Over the days your bird has been missing what direction has the wind come from? The opposite direction (the direction the wind is blowing toward is where you want to place your attention! Light winds would have your bird only moving about half that speed per day. Heavy wings will cause the bird to move much further per day.

Again, sorry for the late visit!
