Still having trouble gitting my 15 y/o Amazon "Bean" on the scaale. Bought a pocket perch, with the fold out legs, to put on the scale, but he wants nbo part of either the scale or the new perch. His weight seems to be down, and I'm nervous. He looks healthy, is eating, just feels light to me. Paranoid I hope. Will have to go to the vet and put him through that if I cant get him on the scale.

Just keep on trying. :) They can be quite stubborn, but patience and perseverance should pay off eventually.

What happens exactly when you place him on the perch/scale???

He will not get on. He goes up my arm, to the side.

Ok, I have an idea: Take the scale and the perch and set it up in the smallest bathroom. Maybe on top of the CLOSED toilet. Then bring Bean into the room and see if he steps on it then. A "little" change of scenery may make him more cooperative. :)

We used almond bits to train our birds to go on the scale, rewarding every time they got a little closer than before. After about 45 minutes or so, they were approaching the scale to take a bit of almond placed on it. Then, once they would approach the scale loking for an almond sliver, we moved to them taking it from the scale perch (with a little lift up from dad)...and progressed to getting them onto the perch prior to reward. It took us about three training sessions with Cleo (Meyers) before the little light bulb clicked over her head. Now, she readily jumps on anytime....and looks for a bit of a treat when she gets off.

This method has worked for numerous other things too - training to allow us to carry them around the house on a stick/perch, for example....

Good luck, and keep us posted!! It is good news that he's eating (and pooping??) normal.

GreyG's method worked for me, too. Except I took the perch off of the scale & lured Cookie (SC2) onto the flat bottom of the scale with safflower seeds. She is notoriously shy about going strange places & ends up going up my arm, like your 'zon. But it just took a little persistence to get her onto the scale.

Crouch down when placing him on the perch. He will want to climb up onto the perch rather than down to your shoulder.

Have you tried millet on the scale then tiering it so when your bird steps u for the millet you can get an accurate representation of her weight?
