We brought Hannah back to the vet today and she had lost another 9 grams. They drew blood and she passed out. They gave her oxygen and then kept her on a heating pad with heat lamps. The vet said she was very critical and a couple of hours later, she went to birdie heaven. The vet was nice enough to do a necropsy after work and called us. She had a huge blockage way down in her digestive track. If we had done an x-ray, there was a slight chance they would have seen it. They found a straw like substance mixed with string like substance. We are not sure what she got into as she has been vomitting since late June. There was a couple of rope toys in her cage and 2 cages above her, a rope ball with string like substance. She wasn't out that often as she liked to hang out in her cage with the door open. I am going to get the ball of string stuff from the vet tomorrow and we will look everywhere to see what she got into. I am scared now of any rope toys. Just thought I would share this in case their bird starts to vomit. Very sad since she was our mating momma and had a mate. I am not sure if we should wait to find him another mate or get on soon. Any suggestions? Thank you from bird lover in Arizona!!

Oh, I'm so sorry about your baby. I hope that you can figure out what the string like stuff is from to keep everyone else safe. My thoughts are with you...

(((((AZ)))))

:(:(:(

I am so very sorry for you ... this story just caps a couple of really $hitty days around here ...

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. You must be very sad. Its always tough to lose a friend. I hope you find out what happened so you can know for your other birds. Our thoughts are with you...

I am so sorry about your friend. As Christy said, hopefully you can figure out the source and put your mind at ease. So sorry :(

:( I am really sorry to hear that....Please take good care of the others..(I mean as far as this toy is concerned)
As for getting him a new mate.... you have 9 tiels right?isn't there a single female?
But if her mate wants to mourn and gets annoyed, let him alone for sometime....:(

Thank you for the responses. I hope this helps with future birds that have a vomitting problem. It is scarey when it comes to toys. She had a small rope toy in her cage so I'm not sure if she was eating that. I didn't see any signs on the toy. I am picking the stuff up today from the vet so we can try to identify what it was.
As for another mate for him, all the other cockatiels we have are males (unfortunately). I am going to take my time and look for a female similiar to Hannah for him. He seems to be doing fine so far but he is lonely now with the other cockatiels caged right next to him. I just feel so bad for him. He and Hannah were together 5 years and just had 4 babies last spring.
Thanks again for all your help and responses.
