We know that every single one of us are passionate about not only our birds, but about all birds.
Sometimes when we see someone doing something that we disagree with, it's hard to watch our manners.
We need to remember that everyone does not have the same access to avian vets, food, or cages that so many of us are so lucky to have.
These are people who want to care for their birds properly or they wouldn't be here. Instead of recriminations, it is much better to think outside the box in ways to help them.

People come to the forum to ask for help with their birds. If they are greeted with attacks, they won't come back and that is a bird who could have been helped that wasn't. While it may feel good in the moment to get things off our chest, how long does that feeling last when we know a bird's life was not improved because of our words?

There is a human being on the other side of that keyboard, and they deserve to be treated with respect, just like every member here.

We put this in the Suggestion forum, because this forum is for suggestions on how to better the forum. I would like to suggest that everyone keep in mind that we are here for the birds, and to help whenever we can. That not only makes the forums a better place, but also helps birds whose owners come here looking for help to have a better life.

We're asking that we all be more careful with our words. All it takes in a thread is for one person to post something mean and then others will follow. If the first posts are nice, that is what usually follows.
Kindness begets kindness.

Before anyone types, please take a second to think of not only the bird someone needs help with, but how you would have felt being attacked when you posted your first post here.

We are asking that everyone choose kindness.

For those who don't, your posts will be edited or deleted, and a warning given.

Wow! I just logged in today and wanted to post something but was scared of getting brow beat or cussed out or the Lord knows what. So, I am going to post it here and see what happens..... I took StanLee to the Avian Specialist and he said that StanLee was excessively nervous and upset (probably due to the abuse) , or all his being moved here and there from the ASPCA, and here comes the part I am worried telling everyone about- He put StanLee on Prozac. Twice a day for a month but I go back in 2 weeks for a checkup. So far, he is already much better! He is not screaming all the time and not hiding in his cage, and he stopped picking his feathers and is very calm! So I will do as the Specialist thinks is best for now and leave him on this medication. Please dont yell or accuse me of hurting my baby. I am only trying to help him- He went through Hell for a year before I got him- and now he is living a life of good food, lots of love, and his own cage, as well as a lady who would fight anyone who tried to do him harm.

Please don't be afraid of being yelled or cursed at here. That is not allowed and we take it very seriously.
If it should ever happen, please alert a Moderator or use the report button.

There is no shame on a bird being put on Prozac, I know many birds that it has helped. I always follow my vet's advice as well, as I think everyone should as long as you trust your vet.

I'm glad StanLee is doing better, and it's obvious that you are taking wonderful care of him. Thank you for rescuing him and giving him a new life filled with love.

No worries, we are all glad you sought a CAV treatment for StanLee. One would hope that the Prozac is not going to be a lifelong medication and that it could be reduced or stopped after awhile, but do as your CAV directs.

Heck, after a busy day at work and a screaming jag by Salty, I am ready for Prozac! And what ever else I can find!

Prozac is a relatively harmless medication that can really help.

If your poor bird was being abused for a long time then his brain may never make the normal neurochemicals to keep him ok. Prozac is like a supplement to add the stuff he needs to be all right.

Thank you for the StanLee update,

well its March 24 and StanLee has been on the meds for a month. he is much calmer and has quit plucking his feathers constantly. He has actually grown in a few and I am thrilled- The Vet and I decided to keep him on the prozac for a little bit longer , we will go month by month until we can begin to wean him off the meds. So far so good!

Kudos for following StanLee's avian specialist advice. Prozac a helpful behavioral modification therapy with proven results, few if any side effects. One of my macaws benefited from Haldol years ago, no hesitation using psychotropic meds as needed. ParrotForums a deeply caring community for parrot and human mental health issues!!
