In the past I purchased sprouts in the grocery store and Rosie did not eat them at all. When at a Phoenix Landed educational meeting on nutrition I was taught that the sprouts in the store are not really fresh and we run a high risk of fungus in these sprouts. Consequently I purchased sprouting seeds from Avain Naturals and sprouted them here in my kitchen. This morning I gave Rosie some with her breakfast and she loved them. She ate them so fast I was amazed.

With this as a background I was wondering how many bird lovers on the forum actually do feed sprouts to their parrots. Any commnets??:eek: If you do not already know fresh sprouts are a winner for both us and our birds for their nutritional content.

When I first got Shadow I had a really hard time getting her to eat enough, she was always hungry calling for food. Her breeder recommended sprouts and she devoured them, burying her beak into the dish and make lots of satisfied noises as she went.

The sprouting process is very easy and I think she'd be really dissapointed if I didn't give them to her every day now. Thanks for the warning on store purchased ones. Is there a way to tell if they are fresh? I use "water guard" when soaking to help ward off fungus and bacteria and make sure I use the sprouts within a few days (storing them in the fridge).

Now that you mention it I use a few drops of grapfruit seed extract in the initial soak overnight. It is such a versatile product for killing germs. I use it to clean the food dishes and it is even in human mouthwash. Great stuff!!

I'm having a really hard time getting GSE in liquid form here. There's some drama with the suppliers or something!?! It's got fantastic antibacterial properties.

Max and Jade get sprouts every day along with their pellets. We sprout our own with an organic sprout mix from the breeder Jade and Ruby came from. It's got a little of everything - sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, garbanzos, peas, lentils, etc. - they love it.

Mel: (ref. GSE) No trouble with suppliers that I know of. I purchased two bottles at the Vitamin Shop but most health food stores carry this product.

None ofl the Health food stores in my area have it in liquid form. I have an account with the biggest Wholesaler of health food products here in Australia for my business and they don't have it in stock either. Unfortunately it's common for things to be held up in customs here or the TGA (our equivalent to FDA) putting a hold on something due to labeling or something silly. Hopefully it's just a temp issue.
