Ruffledfeathers Gilbert is so, so adorable and handsome!

When you first started taking him out in his harness, did he explore right away or was he tentative? Sootie seems to like being outside but doesn't like being on grass, she prefers to be on me. She loves climbing trees but I can't let her get too high or I'd never get her down!

Also, does Gilbert ever play with his harness? Does he pull on it at all?

Last year when he first wore it, it was generally just a short while, around our yard, with me holding him. He didn't want to fly at all (he could barely fly when he got the harness). After I had him on the beach the first time and the wind helped him fly and it was such a large, open space, he seemed to find himself. He got more and more confident from there.

We started going further away from home, for longer, and he got spooked by things less and less. Now I find, being able to fly very well, he seems very confident. He has been out a lot, and been a lot of places (parks, down town, outdoor concert, in shops, beaches, at my office) so he seems to have adjusted. But his most favorite place of all is to just ride around on my shoulder.

He will occasionally pull on it, mostly if he is just bored, like when he rides around on my shoulder, chewing my sunglasses.

Just recently I have noticed he can 'hover' with more skill and he also knows he can just soar up from on the grass. He used to land on the ground and then wait for me to get him. He now knows it is easy to soar back up and around right from on the ground.

Great information, thanks so much. Sootie is clipped right now and I can't wait for her to find her wings again! I will try taking her to the beach on a breezy day, that's a good idea.

Thanks for the advice :) Gilbert is a beauty!

He is such a handsome bird, and those are fun pictures - his own "jungle" - and because the flowers and leaves weren't out yet in those first ones, it shows off his coloring even better! You should soooo nominate that boy for Pet of the Day!

The favorite tree of his is about to bloom. That should make a photo that i'm really in love with. This one is pretty darn cute though.

And I just think this is adorable....on the porch today, it was chilly outside, breezy, but he really wanted to go out so I brought him out and had to keep him snuggly warm. :)

So I take a lot of pics of him with flowers.....he likes flowers and so do I!
I couldn't decide what to use for the photo of the month contest and these were a few others I took this month that I considered:

I have a bunch more I liked of course, haha. He is a well photographed pet.
So I have a story about that cherry tree. I put Gil in it about a week ago and scared the living daylights out of a bird who was in the tree. I realized that there were doves nesting in it right near where I put Gil and I scared the poor bird off the nest. I checked a little later and he was back. So for days I would just quietly go check the nest and be sure everything looked ok. Each day I saw the bird...until yesterday. There are no doves there and the nest is all messed up. :( Something bad happened. I found what appeared to be one of the eggs on the ground, a small white egg which seemed to be about the correct size. I had a little burial of the lost chick. I felt kind of invested in them. I have always been fond of doves.
I took this pic on Sunday, using the telephoto so I wouldn't scare the poor thing again.

A lot of action in that tree, right?

Great pictures of Gilbert! He looks really good among those flowers. Especially that first picture.

Sorry to hear about the doves. You did the right thing in honoring that chick. Hope that the adult made it away ok. I've always been very fond of them. I can do a very accurate mourning dove call blowing into my cupped hands. There have been a few times that I've sat outside calling back and forth with the local birds. I've even called a couple in looking to find the source of the calls. They have such great, soft voices.

At the risk of being repetitive, Gilbert is an absolutely *stunning* BCC! I ordered an aviator harness myself for my Nanday, Ezio, and after receiving it a couple of days ago have only got so far as watching the instructional DVD and starting some of the recommended "exercises" to prepare him--and myself--for success with it. So excited to start being able to take him outside!

That's great!!! Good job following the dvd and prep exercises. I think it will work well for you!
