ok not sure how much information im allowed to give out , but there are people advertising hyacinth macaws for R1000 - R2000 hand reared baby (about $122 - $245) i dont belief it can be true.

Does anyone perhaps have advice?

Scam period - another common scam is saying the expensive animal of any sort is free, but you just need to wire them the money for shipping...

If you feel you must get a bird long distance use a breeder that is well-known to either the 'bird community' or of someone who has used them that you know PERSONALLY. My family had a good experience using a breeder a few states away, but we knew from a friend who had used them that they were real.

Sounds like a scam to me......
Pm me the relevant information, I live in South Africa, will make a few inquiries, phone around, see what the going prices are.

I would just like to say no matter in wich country you stay THERE ARE SO MANY SCAMS WORLD WIDE!!! only get birds from breeders where you can see the birds and pick up the birds when you pay. There are no hyacinth macaws for R2000-00 and blue and golds for R600-00, breeders are normaly a bit cheaper than petshops but if you do some price hunting you will see a pattern - i got my blue and gold for R4500-00 at the breeder and the petshops ask about R8000-00. and be carefull for pay first then they will ship the bird

another scam i saw going around last year was to buy eggs for various parrots for under $50 US buy 10 get 10 free I inquired about it and found out they were in nigeria.Any specific questions i asked were answered with a very poorly written form reply that had nothing to do with what i asked.

That reminds me of an email my mom got a while ago. It said that she'd somehow won or inherited 1 million dollars, but she only had to pay a $150 processing fee, and the funds would be released into her bank account. LOL. (She didn't fall for it, obviously.) I forget where it said it was from, but it was some other country.

yes there are a lot of scams out there. I try to stick by the rule that if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

the bank account scam i have recieved many times and it has been from different countries but the phone number they provide almost always links back to nigeria. 12 years ago i had one of those scams call me and they knew everything about me and my boyfriend at the time all our ID numbers where we lived where we worked it was pretty scary. I reported it to the police and did not fall for it thankfully. But they can get pretty creative.

i was very hesitant when i was adopting my conure as i had placed an ad looking for conures and was contacted by the woman who i got my bird from she said she had the perfect bird for me and wanted me to call her i researched everything i could about her did a reverse search on her phone number found out where she lived and that she was a breeder of bulldogs even before i contacted her. I was even a bit suspicious when she said i could have the bird and only need pay for her gas as it was a 3 hour drive for her to deliver. But she turned out to just really love her bird and knew she was not spending enough time with him. Being that i am home all the time it was perfect for the bird. this was a situation that was one of those too good to be true things but it worked out but i was very cautious about it.

local to me i found a ad for a macaw they wanted 200.00 called it adopting. i sent a email and got a responce back right away that the 200 was for shipping not the bird the bird was free. the ad named a very small little area that i happen to know well. i email back no need for shipping i would pick up, never heard any more from them. then i got a email from the site the ad was on saying the response i got back came from out of the country and to be careful with any deals i made lol.

When I was first looking for an IRN or an Alex, I got an email from a guy who used a picture off of a breeders website and claimed they were his birds. Luckily I had done so much research online that I recognized the picture!

I just saw this ad on hoobly a few days ago and wondered if it was a scam, a breeding pair of hyacinths for $2000! I was going to post it here but I didn't, I just went back to get the url since we were already talking about scams and the ad now says, "WARNING: Hoobly has received a complaint against this ad which we have not yet reviewed. Please proceed with caution! Make sure you know how to recognize scams!"
Hyacinth Macaws Breeders in Scranton, Pennsylvania

Just looked and the only other ad by that poster is for Champion Bloodline English Bulldogs for only $200, says they are moving and can't take them, but the ad is poorly worded and it's hard to tell if they are talking about one or multiple dogs. That ad has also been flagged the same way the macaw one is.
