Parrots
5 Parrots, 8 year old Blue-fronted Amazon, 2 1/2 yr. old African Grey, 2 3/4 year old Senegal. 5 month old ekkie, 5 month old Albino parakeet. Major Mitchell Cockatoo, passed away at age 68.
Just got back from Birdells (my Senni's) check up....

What I saw at the vet's was horrific. Was sitting there waiting next to desk
when this young lady came in frantic and in panic. What I saw was a Pineapple conure plastered to a Rat Glue trap, I MEAN STUCK GOOD.

I looked at her and just had to speak my mind....What were you thinking?
where did you have the Glue traps at??

She said she put 8 of them around the parrot cage to keep mice and rats out.

I said did you ever see rats or mice around cage? She said "well...no, I put them as a precautionary measure, but the parrot keeps trying to climb down...."

( Duh) I said that's what parrots do...and second, if he was trying to climb down then "hello in there" the potential for an accident is right before your eyes.

I quit talking after that..... you can't fix stupid. As for the poor parrot, I didn't want to know. it was pasted pretty bad.

What is wrong with people???

Awwwww.

Poor thing.
And no... People are unbelievable sometimes.

Yes, I'm afraid they are :( Poor baby, I hope they found a painless way to unglue it :(

File that one away under WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GONNA HAPPEN THE SECOND THE BIRD GOT LET OUT OF HIS CAGE?!

Not the worst thing I've heard.

Not exactly the brightest bulb in the package either...

I do too....they are incredibly sticky....I a neighbor that had a long haired dachshund and got stuck on one....they are not easy at all to get off.
let alone a fragile bird.

Sadly, nothing 'shocks' me anymore when it comes to human stupidity:(. Poor little bird, hope the vet was able to free him/her with as little pain as possible! Not to mention how cruel to the rodent those glue traps are. Had she used a live trap, none of this would have happened (at worse, the bird was caught in a live trap, uninjured).

I hear ya.....Sometimes you just want to go off on someone like that.....
but realize, what's the use, they are beyond stupid. I didn't know that was possible.

Unfortunately forum rules prevent me from saying where I'd like to stick numerous of those glue traps. :54:

I tried to call the vet's office to find out if the bird made it, they wouldn't give me any info....however my wife called one of the receptionists as she knew her, and was told they put the bird down. It dislocated a few bones in it's struggle.....

Awwww dang it !!! That's not fair.

I hear ya....me too..... And the bird didn't make it.

Makes me want to slap the stupid out of somebody that desperately needs it. But what's the use, it won't fix anything.

[emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33] OMG that's so terrible.... Poor bird [emoji26]

I know....make's me a bit teary eyed, as I knew when I left the vets the
poor thing was doomed. The sight I saw just sticks in my head....
So sad.

Just heartbreaking, im so sorry u had to go through that. That poor little soul.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if bird owners ( all pets owners for that matter ) where required to complete a basic "how to class" before being allowed to purchase?

You need a permit to change the color of your house, but can walk out of a pet store with a living soul if u have a few dollars in your pocket.

Boy oh boy are out priorities mixed up.

Not that I'd ever let it happen but if it were my bird I would have toweled it and cut off as much of the trap as I could.

I quit using those traps because I found just a mouse leg stuck to one and realized how cruel they are. I did want it dead but I didn't want it to suffer like that.

Preaching to the choir...

I've been advocating for species specific parrot handling classes for at least 10 years... and I used to teach them FOR FREE down at the rescue, for many years, as part of the IF YOU WANT TO ADOPT FROM US YOU TAKE THE DANG CLASS program.

YOU CAN'T GET INTO FALCONRY WITHOUT FIRST UNDERGOING AN INTERNSHIP, A LICENSING TEST, AND PROOF OF A PROPER HABITAT/ENCLOSURE FOR THE BIRD.

It would at least cut down on the impulse purchases.

This makes me sick to my stomach.

And yes, it was an incredibly stupid decision BUT... as dumb as it was, her heart was in the right place. She was trying to do what, in her mind, would be keeping her pet safe. If she ran into the vet in a panic... I can't even imagine how she must have been feeling (idiot or not).

I accidentally killed my hamster when I was 7. I am STILL not over it (21 years later) and can't even tell the story without crying.

Granted, I was 7 years old, still.

So SAD :( Poor little birdie. I hope her little soul is happy and flying free now.

An unbelievably sad story with a horrific outcome. I cannot imagine how intensely the poor conure suffered while the incoherently stupid human will pout for a few days and sponge sympathy from Facebook.
