We had the electricians at work today and they had a cherry picker type thing fixing some lights in the barn. They ended up going around pulling all of the birds nests from the roof and turns out they all had chicks in them. They just pulled them down and threw them in a pile and left them there to die =( Now i hunt and am fine with death and the sparrows are pests around the place BUT how irresponsible and sick! At least put the poor little guys out of their misery!! I think some of the dogs got into it and got majority of them which at least would have been quick but i just came back from lunch to find the mess of nests and dead baby birds and it broke my heart. I hope this haunts them and they cant sleep.
Im sorry i just had to share this with someone, it makes me feel ill.

i know how horrible it is. i understand invasive species, but i dont believe they should die. its not their fault. most of the time they are introduced from human's selfishness or carelessness. you have to give them credit--these species are adaptable to anything, and in a world constantly changing, in some ways, you need to be adaptable to survive. it just sucks that so many innocent lives have to suffer from human carelessness and all they are doing is living their life, surviving. they have no notion of that being where they belong or not, they were put there in most cases and just forge themselves a life there.

i understand how horrible it is to witness something like that. i remember when i was a kid i found a blinded starling. it seemed to have been attacked by a cat and lost both of its eyes. i was in fourth grade on the way to school when i found him. i picked him up, brought him to the school office and begged them to call someone to help him. the secretary told me to just toss him outside because there were already so many starlings out there. its sickening. its still a living creature who feels pain and they should be helped too.

if thats our mentality, lets stop helping humans, there's already too many of us out there... you cant pick one species over the other, either you help them all or you help none. speciesism?

thats my take on it. i think its horribly sad :( if it were me, i'd be finding each and every one of their little bodies and having a funeral for every single one :(

Yea it's not the fact they die, like I said they are pests here and they are everywhere. It's just the way they went about it, not man enough to do a proper job. Like I said I hunt but I shoot to kill not injure. If I have to I will end the lives of and birds, rabbits or other pests I encourage my dog to catch if he won't do the job properly and efficiently. Be responsible!

I feel so bad for the birdy mamas and papas perhaps watching the mass genocide of their babies.

Poor sparrows!

Pigeons get the same rap, as do seagulls. Pigeons have their nests pulled down and destroyed with living squabs all the time /: if they bug you so much, boil the eggs and replace them. Magical, now they won't have 'annoying' squabs.
I own 12 pigeons and their adorable. I don't expect anyone to like them, but if you wouldn't kill an eagle like it don't do it to a pigeon!

And don't even get me started on seagulls. They're treated like crap, utter crap. When we head to Valdez, there's gut pens that the seagulls love to dive into and eat. But they're gluttons, and often water log themselves. Seeing a dead seagull is not unusual. But one day I remember finding a live one. I was on tears trying to find someone to help him. They used a shovel and fish stabber to lift him over the side of the bin. He may or may not have made it, but he Made it to the shore and that's all that matters.

And then, later that night, I was showing my grandma how sad the dead seagulls were, when I found a live one! I happened to have our long handled net so I was going to scoop him up, but then, my grandma yelled at me and not to touch it. With the net. Wut. I tried yelling back, but I was young and didn't have much rebellious in me.

And then, there was a time we were in Chitna and found a seagull with a broken wing? My mom didn't let me keep him /: my mom usual is ok with that sorta stuff, but we were heading to fish and she didn't want me carrying a seagull everywhere and didn't want to go back.

And then there was the time I found a limping seagull who very clearly wrapped in fishing line. Probably swallowed a hook. I tried to get help from the native-animal rescue center, but they didn't notice and I didn't see it until later. I don't think they ever did anything.

I really like seagulls but everyone hates them because they reproduce quickly and are good at surviving.

gulls are so incredibly beautiful and intelligent. i have to agree with you, they are amazing birds, but people dont like them because theyre "common"

to Freespin, i have no issue with hunting for food and such. i do have issues with strictly trophy and fur hunting (if you eat it and what not, im okay with that) but thats me. a humane and compassionate hunter who respects animals is the kind of hunter we need more of. i dont think they should be allowed to suffer, so thats what makes seeing things like this so sad. because not everyone sees it the same way we do.

What the???? Why would someone do something so cold hearted?!?! :( Those poor baby's! Yes they can get out of hand but they are little living things so they have feelings! Aw Im sorry that happened! :(

I only shoot pests or for food. Bunnies and such I feed to my dogs, birds I toss to the hawks =) I also hate waste!

I used to work on the ground floor a historical building that had these "retractable" old-fashion looking awnings on the first 3 stories of windows. You had to pull them up for snow or high winds, but they were on a pulley system (like blinds), so it was really easy to do. The floor above us would often roll up their awning and not put it back down for weeks at a time, so the pigeons would build nests in it. More than a few times, I came in to work and found eggs and nests splattered on the sidewalk out front of my work and had to clean it up since it was on the sidewalk in front of our storefront. It made me SO pissed these people couldn't take >2 minutes out of their day to put down an awning after bad weather passed so the pigeons wouldn't nest there in the first place. Even more irritating- we were right across the street from a huge park with big trees where nesting birds wouldn't have bothered a soul in the world, but because those people were lazy, the birds thought they'd found a new home where they never should've been.

I HATE people who facilitate an unnecessary or unnecessarily cruel death of animals.

I some ways it's part of the job I do. If I work on old buildings we often find nests, with babies. No if I CAN work around them I will, but it's not always practical. Song birds I WON'T touch...... PLUS in the uk it's against the law. Pigeons I must admit are a different story. They are classed as vermin so are dispatched.
Harsh reality I'm afraid. Once you upset the nesting site parents rarely return!!!
