Hi y'all. Missy seems to have acquired an almost garlic-y (?) smell. I think it's her breath. Of course she doesn't get anything of the like so I find it odd.
Is this normal for IRN's? She is 9 months now and I am wondering if it hormones.
Any thoughts?

Beak wash?

Just kidding. It might be her breath. Jasper has strange-smelling breath.

You could try giving her a bath or shower, too.

Hoping that Missy is doing (smelling) better.

If it is her breath, you may want to consult an Avian Vet to check for sour crop or crop stasis.
Although I've never heard of a garlic smell before.
I'm not saying that's what it is, only an Avian vet can say for sure.

Sour crop (crop stasis) can be caused by bacterial, yeast, and / or viral infections.

Anyway, a few years ago we noticed that Arika's breath smelled like sour milk, we immediately took her to her Avian Vet, they did a crop sample, processed it and confirmed it was sour crop.
Please make sure you have a certified Avian Vet perform a crop sample.
They prescribed some antibiotics, did not suggest withholding food, and she was better after about a week.

Bottom line, if her condition persists or you are concerned something is really wrong, best bet would be a n Avian Vet visit. That's the only way to know for sure if something is going on.

Please keep us up to date on how Missy is doing.

Wakawaka is right on. Don’t know what I (wasn’t) thinking.

Bad breath can be transitory, from something they’ve eaten; or lasting. If it lasts you need to get it checked out.

I think my Jasper’s breath is funky from the fish oil or fish meal in Zupreem. But, he loves it. Whatever.

Bongo's breath sometimes stinks a little if she was just eating her own regurgitation, (nothing like half-digested pellet and veggie glop!) but that's the only time I've ever gotten any sort of scent from her breath that I can discern, and it goes away within moments.

If it persists, I'm with the others -- vet trip time. Hope she's okay!
