If it says "bird safe" or something similar on the label.....you can often tell by the oily smell it has.....also, I believe Manila ropes are oil treated, while all sisal ropes are not.....there is a company, T.W. Evans Cordage that will certify their ropes to be oil free.....

If the label does not say whether it is bird safe, contact them, but always do your contacting in writing, telephone calls are just hear-say.....
