Ok well i lost one of the teils we got :(
this morning the boy was puffed and on the cage floor....
i had to get my daughter to gymnastics and when i was there i called to get him in for an ER visit with our avian.

he was very kind and told me to pop in after i was done with m daughters class...
well he was already gone when i stopped home to pick him up..

so now i feel horrible...too little too late i guess.

but now i am worried for my other birds. Plus Opal will be arriving this thursday.

i had them in a spare bedroom and washed my hands and changed my clothes just for normal quarantine reasons, but now i am nervous that whatever took him is in my home!

after i removed the boy i cleaned the cage really well and all of the perches, threw away the toys and hoped the girl would do better.
she laid an egg on the floor yesterday but had no interest in it.
she looks fine..health wise but what is out there that one can have that the other doesn't?

his symptoms were open mouth breathing and itching his beak, then when he was gone he had yellow crust blocking his nares....

what can i do to ensure safety to my flock?
and am i just to assume the girl has it too?

sorry...i have never dealt with an illness before...only pleasant well visits...

thanks....

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your little boy :(

I would have a necropsy done, that way you know what was wrong and if your other birds are at risk or not.

sorry to hear you lost your male....like Shirre said, it's the only way you will know for certain what he died of, and then you can treat your female effectively.

by the symptoms you describe it either sounds like an upper respiratory infection, or scaly face mites.(that can be treated with Ivermectin)but is highly contagious.

if it is either of those, you need to take her to the vets asap!

good luck Sadie, let us know what happens pls.

thanks, my husband is going to be thrilled he traded his stereo for vet bills :/
lucky for me he is a roll with what life offers kinda guy.

i have the boys..body. i am scared to do anything with it (in the garage) we were talking about doing a necropsy but that can't be done until tuesday....
bit off way more than i can chew...

i can get her in Tuesday as well... will everything be ok until then...i hate thinking i gave my birds a death sentence because i felt bad for this pair....
i hope i didnt make things worse..i put some ACV in their water while trying to get them healthy and turned around....

If you can't take the boy in for a necropsy right away, wrap him up and place him in the fridge- not the freezer.

If you see anyone else exhibiting symptoms, you should take them in immediately -does your Avet do emergency appointments?

my a vet doesn't, we have an all pet er near my home. 90$ just to walk in the door.
like i said feeling i bit off more than i can chew now but i committed to these 2...

i'm assuming it would be best just to get her in asap then wait for my vet to be back in on tues?

ok i will get him in the fridge....how sad....
this isn't something i had ever planned on...just wanted to help them....

Unfortunately when they get stressed from moving their symptoms can pop up! I would get her in to be checked out ASAP!

I'm so terribly sorry for your sudden loss. :(

I 100% agree with Michael to get the female seen ASAP. Tuesday is a long time away, and they can go downhill so super fast, unfortunately.

Best of luck, and please keep us posted.

like I said, you should get her to a vet asap.
vets are expensive no matter which one you see, emergency or otherwise.

don't blame yourself, it sounds like they came to you that way.

I am so sorry for your loss of the little boy:( I am praying that the female will be fine, please update after she sees the vet.
Sounds like you have a wonderful hubby, too:)

So i am happy we waiting to take her until this morning to take her to the clinic.
The vet tech fell in love with her colors and i told her how i came to have her and i was just considering finding her a home that would take care of her in the long run.
I let her know the horrible conditions she came from so i couldnt guarantee anything about her and that she was living on seed in a smoke filled home, constantly laying...

so she offered to pay 75% of the bill to take her home with her.
The vet said she looked good. no physical signs of illness and no external issues or parasites.
Amy (the tech) told me she would give me a call when the tests came back so i knew if i had to worry about my birds.

so i am hoping that everything turned out for the best and she is where she is supposed to be...
In a knowledgeable home who will take care of her the way she deserves.
i just feel so bad the little boy didnt get that opportunity...

Now, if you dont mind me asking...what can i use to disinfect the area of the home they stayed in just in case?

Thank you all for your advice

You can disinfect with vinegar water mix solution but they do sell the solution to disinfect with thattsafe for birds. Good outcome for the girl!!! ;)

i am happy it worked out for one of them at least. bitter sweet..

but thank you, i actually use vinegar water mix to clean the house anyway so i will just make a little extra stronger batch for piece of mind.

i wasn't sure if vinegar was strong enough to disinfect that well.
