Should I Give Up After Two Weeks?

I don't know if you have the resources for this, but one of those drones with a camera makes a great tool for finding birds in the wild (especially bright colored ones like a sun conure).

I think some of the drones have a 3 mile view radius. So if you think he might be in the neighborhood, you could station the drone up over your house, and just sit on your coach with your laptop and look around for him through the camera , with the ability to pan 360 degrees and zoom in/out of trees/backyards etc.

You might even be able to buy one on credit and return it later.

Also try downloading a recording of some typical conure sounds/calls to your phone and play it outside as loud as you can. If bird calls can attract wild birds, it might work.

Don't give up. Follow GalleriaGila's search protocol fully. Birdie escaped last Thanksgiving day when I opened the front door to pick up a package. She just swooped past me and when I looked up, she was gone. It was a very windy, stormy day and I thought for sure she wouldn't survive it. But someone saw my posts and called me. It seems a Facebook friend had taken her in the day after Thanksgiving about 6 miles away. The family got very attached to Birdie....bought a cage and everything when I called them. They brought her back that night much to the chagrin of two little red headed boys. Turns out, the husband is our State Representative! The local paper called me for an interview and she made the paper with a great photo standing on the little boy's shoulder! She was gone for 8 days, but very well taken care of. She came right up to their front door step railing and screamed to be let in and fed! Someone has her I'm sure.

A story with a great ending! Thank goodness the family was honest and caring enough to return Birdie. Perhaps they adopted a hapless bird to fill the cage and hearts of the little boys.

I am just now seeing this, but no!!! You don't give up after a month, or a year! People's pet parrots are found months if not years after they get loose all the time!

The best resource is the internet, and the best sites to post on and check to see if he's been found, if you haven't already posted on them and checked, are Parrot911, ParrotAlert, and all of your local Craigslist pages!!! People tend to post birds that they've found on their local Craigslist pages, and I'm talking you need to do the full search on Craigslist, then Community, then Pets, and go the full 200 miles out that Craigslist allows you to search!

And keep in mind that he may be quite a long distance away by now, especially with wind and such, if it's been 3-4 weeks he could be in Pennsylvania, Deleware, Virginia, New Jersey by now...

Most tame birds will eventually go to someone after a while of being lost, so it's very likely that someone has him and may very well have registered finding him on either Craigslist or Parrot911, more lost birds are reunited months and months and months and years after being lost on Parrot911 than anywhere else!!!

Don't give up! I know people who have found their lost birds up to 5 months after losing them, one because the person who finally found him took him to a local pet shop and they were made aware he was missing by the owner, and the other was found in Ohio (I'm in central PA) and was posted on Craigslist! So it's up to you to stick with it and keep looking everywhere possible, for him! I'll do my part too, I'm not that far away from you, about 3 hours (in State College, PA), so I'll take a quick scan of the sites I'm aware of to see if anyone has posted finding him...

So true- I used to have an aviary when I was young(er) (thanks dad!) and I think we had just as many 'guests' hanging from/on the outside (lost or escaped birds) over the years as we had inside.

That said- it could have been birdnapped/ rescued by someone who doesn't have a clue how to look for people looking for their bird ... or (sorry to say it out loud) it could have been eaten by something larger.
Someone else said it before: Not knowing is the worst!

Just keep and eye out, hope for the best, great things happen a million times a day.

Get the Nextdoor app from iTunes. It's free. Join it by putting in your neighborhood. I belong and I see a lot of found dogs, cats and yes, parrots all the time. My county (Brevard) has a site where you report a lost or found pet. They automatically put it on Facebook, Nextdoor and a myriad of other sites. That's how I found Birdie....through the county's post. Bird lovers peruse these posts daily and will call if they think they've found your bird.

Thank you, everyone, for your support. I'm unable to do much more than check Facebook and the like for him at this point, but I'm trying to stay positive. I looked into Nextdoor when this was initially happening, but apparently, my neighborhood isn't on Nextdoor. Likely because of how spread out all of the houses are, haha!

I was wondering if you had heard anything. Still crossing my fingers---thank you for the update!

Not only bird calls, but your own voice as well. I’d go even further and use a Bluetooth Speaker to make sure you’re covering a much larger area. Our cell phone speakers are not adequate enough for something of this nature.
I love the drone idea. 👍🏻

Good Luck!! 🖤

Yeah, the drone idea is good, but he could be too far away for it to be useful enough. We've got plenty of woods for him to hide in, and he may have gone farther than we're hoping. I've reached my limit of my outdoor searching, which lasted at least a week or two. Honestly, that's impressive for a gaming hermit like me. All I can do now is ask others for help, which is becoming frustrating. Of course, I'll keep doing what I can.

Did you list him as being lost on your local Craigslist pages? Parrot911? ParrotAlert? All much better resources than Facebook, all are completely free, and take 5 minutes to do so. And are you checking your local Craigslist pages to see if anyone has listed him as being found or for sale every day? If not, you need to do so ASAP!!!

I've been looking at ParrotAlert, and I check Craigslist here and there.
There's really nothing so far. It makes me want to go out into the woods all over again, but I can't keep exerting myself by hiking to the middle of the forest and then running out of energy.

Hello,

First of all I’m very sorry to hear about this. I lost my Eclectus back in early August. We searched for her day and night. My home is near a forest so you may imagine how hard it could going through all the brush. At the end, we were in our occasional visit to the pet shop, just in case she was found. There we learned that someone caught a similar bird and tried to sell it. Same day, posted a hundred or so posters. The next day, you wouldn’t believe it but we found her. At the end, she spend a total of 16 days out in the wild. So, I don’t think you should give up yet. They are pretty resourceful in finding food and water.

Best of luck to you!
