should I be concerned?

I got an email back on the 8th of Aug from a local linnie breeder stating that she had two pairs of linnies on eggs and that she thinks they've been on them for 2 weeks. I emailed her yesterday (30th of aug) asking her if they've hatched yet since to my knowledge, the incubation period is between 18 and 21 days. She said they haven't hatched yet, is this normal or are her pairs sitting on infertile eggs?

Incubation is between 18 and 21 days. If the hen has been sitting the eggs for two weeks, thats only 14 days (if the breeder is correct). I'd not begin getting concerned until another 7-10 days have passed.

If you want to know if the eggs are fertile or not, you can ask her if she's candled the eggs. By this time she should be able to candle the eggs and know if they're fertile or not without any problems at all.

thats way longer then 21 days! idk maybe you should as if she's candled them.

if they had been sitting for 2 weeks when the breeder contacted you on the 8th then they should of hatched by now...

DUH! Somehow I missed the part about the 8th. I'm getting a little spacey in my "middle ages" (as my kids like to say).

YES - I'd give the breeder a call and ask what's up. The eggs should be hatched by now and it's about the right time for the breeder to be pulling the babies for handfeeding (if that's what your breeder does).

EDIT: In reareading (closely rereading) your original post, I noticed that you said the breeder *thought* the birds had been sitting the eggs for two weeks on the eighth? She didn't know for sure? And this breeder is still allowing the same birds to sit the same eggs 23 days later? for a total brood of 37 days? That's highly concerning to me - to the point where I'd suggest you begin looking for another breeder. Allowing birds to brood a clutch that long is at best an amateur mistake, and at worst the sign of a poorly educated breeder or a poorly maintained breeding program. Brooding a clutch of eggs is very hard on the parents of the clutch of eggs under the best of circumstances, and that's when they hatch right on time. Allowing a hen to sit a clutch almost twice as long as is normal, to me borders on neglect.

Yes, I tend to be a bit harsh, especially not knowing all of the details, but I love birds dearly and hate the idea of seeing any of them mistreated in any way.

I've given up on this breeder, I asked her WTF was going on, shouldn't they have hatched like last week, and her response was "I'm thinking so. Theyre in the box again though." Too bad there aren't any other linnie breeders in my area (buffalo, ny). I'm to the point that I just wanna throw my hands up and say 'forget birds altogether' :(

Don't give up ! I found a breeder for you that breeds almost every exotic bird known to man kind(almost). They also breed Linnie's!thier in wheatfield but they also ship. It called Marias Birds.Heres the website,

Mariasbirds.com

And if that doesn't work out for you go to bird breeders.com to find a breeder that your comfterble with.

Keep us updated and good luck!:greenyellow::blue2::)

I hate to break it to you, but maria is the breeder that I'm having issues with, when I asked her if she'd even candled the eggs, here is the response I got
"No, i looked last night and she hid them so im guessing infertile. Yes thats correct about breeding again. I did get a new candler too so ill be able to candle these guys"

I found another breeder for you . They currently are
Hand feeding 2 Linnie's. One is olive green and the other is dark green. The name of the aviary is west piont aviary in Utah they also ship . The website is west piont avary.com
Both of the baby's are boys I think.

Linnies can be hard to find but they are worth the search and wait. Is there a bird fair coming up in your area?

I know icywolf on here has linnie babies now. She is in PA. I can get u contact info if u want, just let me know. She is not the breeder, another friend of both of ours is the breeder but had hand surgery and can't hand feed so icywolf (Sara) has her babies.

Hey Wulfie,
Saw on the linnie forum you found a breeder and decided on an EB. Congrats! I like my EB, but if you every do get a chance to get a linnie, I'd highly recommend one. I think Peggy and Alice were mentioned to you as breeders, but there are other good ones on the forum or people that can refer you to ones not on the forum. If you can save up the money to ship, linnies are awesome!

just found out this morning that this new breeder also breeds linnies :D Looks like it's gonna be a linnie, found out this breeder doesn't handfeed his english budgies but does handfeed and dna test his linnies
