My beautiful new shelter playmate. Apparently I'm the only one he is semi fond of listening to right now. He is letting me preen his head and sits with me for a little bit before wandering off the other side of the room to contemplate me at a distance. So far he isn't interested in playing games or with toys and looked at me like I lost my mind when I tried the last time:rolleyes:

I'm also interested in a moluccan right now but so far he is only letting me pet him while he is in the cage and he is very nervous about the ordeal. I think I might be going back up to the shelter this weekend so I'll get to play with them again soon:D

Your new friend is a beauty!

If you have time, we'd love more shelter photos!

Wow, he's gorgeous!

Might be that he just does not know how to play...

Birds that have been locked up and perch potatoing for a long time, sometimes forget what that's like.

Once they remember, however, the floodgates open, and the playahaulic in them comes out.

Macs also often have to get to know you first... before they will open up to you that way.

Give it time, patience, and encouragement.

That's what I figured. He's a transfer from another rescue so not sure his exact history. He will figure it out and then I'll wonder why I encouraged it :p

Though there's something about this one....I think he is going to be interesting once he is more comfortable!

What kind of macaw? Military?

He is a harlequin macaw which is a blue&gold green wing hybrid. We do have a new military at the shelter though just no pictures of that one right now.

He is beautiful! Any chance you will end up bringing him home to foster?

Rescues can take time to open up like Birdman said. My GCC and CAG both are rescues and have taken time to play. The GCC is a play addict and the CAG only here two months or so is now opening up and tearing paper like crazy.

Not likely since he already shows an interest in me. We try not to take on ones who are more likely to bond with any of us strongly. Though you can't always tell of course but since he shows interest in me we don't think it would be a good idea.

I know I just found the look he gave me when I had a toy and was trying to get him to play amusing. The look said I should be the one locked up not him :D I honestly don't expect to get him to really play with me before he is adopted...at least I hope I don't have that much time to try with him! Though we are having trouble finding macaw homes lately.

He's really beautiful. I hope he finds his forever home soon.

The still unnamed macaw! People are referring to him as Victorias Harlequin right now:rolleyes:

He is still pretty nervous. He finally stepped up onto my bare arm while in the cages this weekend. Usually I use a towel so I don't stress him too much because for some reason the arm offended him more than a towel. He was pretty nervous so I went to the food room and sat with him for while. Then he got put away but was able to bring him out and across to the house later in the day:) He actually met one adopter this weekend! Unfortunately she was nervous which made him nervous and there was much bouncing around from arm to arm so took him away but he never showed an inclination to bite which was good!

He is letting me touch his head and body much more. I've been touching the wings and kind of pulling them out a bit. He is getting a little more comfortable. Considering he hasn't really been handled much in his life he isn't too bad anymore and is officially available for adopters to meet...as long as I don't stuff him in my shirt while going home one day:D

They found me sitting with him in the feed room:rolleyes: He got a little nervous when they came in but he calmed a bit after a couple minutes.

I kind of want to take him home but keep telling myself an adopter with just him or one other bird would mean he got a lot more one on one time!
