Hi there ,

My Jack is just over 8 months old and I know sexual maturity might still be a fair way off. Just wondering though when this is and what changes to look out for or prepare for ?
I have 2 very popular books on the eclectus but cant currently find them due to some renovations through our house,, I think I boxed them.
I was recieving emails on parrot tips and one of the emails mentions sexual maturity and what not to do, biting etc.
So just wondering what to do to prevent being bitten during this stage ( hopefully ) and what other things I need to know ?
Is it around 1 yr of age or is it closer to 2 yrs , I cannot remember.
I just want to prepare for this stage in advance.
Thanks

Parrots show sexual maturity at different ages. The smaller birds, ie Cockatiels, Parakeets, Parrotlets, etc can become sexually mature at 6 months old. The larger parrots generally show signs of sexual maturity anywhere from 2-5 years old. Some of the signs I've seen with my birds have been: masturbation on an object or an attempt on a person; much regurgitation, again on an object or a person, they can become territorial in their cage or you'll find them nesting in a spot in their cage or around the home. When some of my macaws are in the throws of heightened hormones, they will become jealous of my interaction with other birds. Also, you may find that they become a little more difficult to handle. This does pass. I find that spring and summer can be the worst. I hope this helps. If you notice anything, let us know and we'll help you the best we can.:blue:
