hello,
new to the forum,
I just lost my 19 year old lovebird hours ago...
our vet is closed today and tomorrow reopening Monday.
We would like to have him cremated in a nice box but are not sure how to preserve him the next couple days before taking him in. I know freezing is an option but how do I make sure nothing freezes and sticks to his feathers?
Any help you can give is appreciated.

Aww, I'm so sorry to hear that, my condolences. It is suggested to put your bird in the fridge if taki.g for a necropsy, I imagine this would apply here as well.

As Sandy mentioned, if the bird is to be necropsied, a zip-lock bag works very well and you should not add any moisture to the bag.....I might assume the same would be true for your little friend. While freezing tends to degrade the body too much for a necropsy, I'm sure your friend could be frozen.

Like Weco said, if you're not hoping for an examination of your little guy, then freezing is just fine. Any 'tightly sealed' bags/boxes that wont allow moisture in will work just fine. (You don't want frozen water on your baby.)

I'd say the fridge would be okay too, but I personally wouldn't want to see my baby in the fridge with any sign of... passing. Freezing pretty much preserves the body as it is. Cooling just slows down the process.

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened

Something I plan to do when I reach that point(hopefully not for a very long time) is buy a small vial necklace and transfer some of the ashes to it so I can wear my beloved friend near my heart every day.

So sorry for your loss, 19 years is a life time

[SIZE=+1] LIGHTLY coat the body with rubbing alcohol.
Use use a q-tip but a cotton ball would probably work better.
Place the bird in a zip lock bag and put it in the REFRIGERATOR, NOT the freezer.
Never freeze the body, it ruins the tissue.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my sun conure last year and she was fine in the refrigerator. She looked perfect when i brought her for necropsy and cremation. I know it's really hard to even think about, but i hope you find some comfort when you have your baby's ashes back with you.
