You know how we all put paper on the floor around the cage, so our birds will not poop the floor and ruin it?

Specially with bigger birds? Specially when u got wooden or carpet floors?

When taking poop off the floor is the same or worse than cleaning after a small dog?

I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier, but you can actially make your life easier with a plastic floor protector that people use under their computer chairs.

Example: KOLON Floor protector - IKEA

Floor protectors are plastic. It means that you can wash it with anything!
Also, it looks much nicer than having papers on the floor.

Hope this helps someone :D

That is a great idea. We have use something similar under our cage. I went to our local hardware store and brought a couple of metres of plastic that us meant for outdoor tablecloths. It works well - you just take it out side and hose it. Only cost about $30 for this because these computer chair protectors are quite expensive here in Oz.

It's not big enough for larger cages. It might work for smaller ones though. I still prefer news papers, they are basically free since we get them to read the news. So they serve double duty, plus I can cover as big an area as I need to by just adding more. Plus, I don't have to worry about cleaning the covering, I just bundle it up and throw it away and replace it.

I just bought some cheap rugs...I just take them out and wash then every so often and they fit under the bigger cages too...they also help catch stray feathers and floofies

I used to have what ParkersMom has--I bought inexpensive 'throw rugs' for around the cage and took them out, shook and washed them until they were tattered and then replaced them. Now i have been more successful with Gil not pooping EVERYWHERE and i have just been wiping the hard wood floor. So far, so good. (if you wipe it immediately, not too bad, just a pain in the neck).

I am with you. I would rather throw paper away than scrub anything. It's also faster and I don't have to get my hands dirty.

I use bed wetter pads (like puppy pads, but the kinds they sell for humans) and place them underneath the mess areas, then put newspaper on top. Most of the time I can throw the newspaper away and the pad hasn't even gotten wet... and if my bird does manage to wet through the newspaper, the pad as a plastic backing and prevents it from staining the floor.

I shake 'em out, I usually only go through them once a week at the most. Usually I just shake the seeds off and put it back down with fresh newspaper ^^

I did have a plastic mat down like in OP a long time ago (I no longer have it) but it was great for protecting the floor too!

I use the pee pads under parker's hanging playgym

It's called a KOLON mat and it's made out of PET plastic. It's like it was meant to be.

I just use towels.....we don't use color towels as those are for animal use as we use white towels. So we take them outside to shake excess junk and toss it in the washer to wash it clean. Otherwise I use news paper.

I didn't realise the irony of the name :D

The trick that works for me, it's that I can just spray it with water and leave like that.
After 10 minutes, I come back with a roll of paper towels and the plastic thing is shiny as new.

I just re-did my room, and the papers were always leaving a grayish mess, so it was 'not pretty'.

The problem with the rugs, it's that if I don't have the time to wash it on the weekend and will just use vacuum, the poop 'burns trough' and gets to the floor. I have a couple of spots that changed colours because of that :(
I got the rug from the dollar store, maybe it's too thin.

It's true that if you have a macaw, with a cage for his size, it will be too small. (It looks like u can give the whole room to a bird like that with just installing a 'cage' door)
I have a yellow naped amazon who lives in a sleeping cage.

Could parrot poop cause damage to tiles? I know ceramic is immune to most things, but you've got me worried now.

I have both walls and the floor protected by acrylic sheets. I use museum putty to attach the wall pieces (placed down far enough so Mr "I want what I shouldn't have" can't reach them).

Naaaaah! I had tile floors back in Argentina and was really lazy to scrub (as most teenagers) the poop of my Quaker. It survived and did not discolour.
You will only have a problem with material that can absorb, like wood, carpet, cork floor, etc.
Rock, tile, cement and others are inmune.

Did you 'glue' an acrilic sheet to the wall? Isn't that permanent? Removing it will not damage the walls?
I don't thing I understeand your setup. Wall protection is also interesting, since I will be changing the traditional paint for wood soon.
Can you shoot a pic?

You can drill holes into the acrylic sheets and attach them to the wall or you can just get the 3M hooks as they're removable without doing any damage to your paint or wall. Then hang shower curtains on it. You can get the fabric/polyester type of curtains from walmart pretty cheap and they're machine washable.

No I use the museum putty to stick them to the walls. That way theres no holes or glue.

I'm liking these ideas, as currently I just use pinned down paper towels, which gets on my friend's nerves if it's the cage Kumiko uses over her house.

We use sheets of plastic under Emmy's cage and playstand. It makes for easy clean-up. They were inexpensive, intended to be runners over carpet in high-traffic areas. We cut them to size and they work well.
