So as a newer large parrot owner and as you other medium or large parrot owners know birds like to chew. That means new toys and more money spent on them. I'm thrifty and handy and I like to save money where I can. So I've seen some not so and so rather expensive toys and decided "hey I could make that". So i'm making this thread to show what i've built and the costs of each toy. Feel free to share your own as well and try to include details such as how you built it, where you got the materials, and how much they were.

A huge money save was the #1 thing you need. A cage! Mine is a hex shape, approx 3' by 6'. So far I have spent a total of about $40-50. The 6 posts were about $1.50, the top and bottom were from one 8' by 4' board at $20, the back 3 sides were from 2 boards 4' by 8' (the kind that usually are the back of an entertainment center) at about $8 a piece. Now I have yet to finish the door and other 2 sides but have planned them out. It'll be another 50-80 or so to completely finish it. Heres a link to my plans (in word paint) and a couple of pics from the cam on my laptop sorry cant find my camera.

I made my own perch that hangs from the ceiling of the cage. I took a branch of a safe wood tree - free, bought the double sided screw (you need two and drill the holes in the branch before hand or you'll inevitably crack it) about $2-3, 2 or 4 large washers $1-2 for all, 2 wing nuts $1, 2 eye hole screws $1.50 each screwed them into the ceiling, and 4 feet of ss chain. $1.60 a foot. So over all about $12. All these supplies have been bought from home depot so far. cept the branch. Although petsmart has some cheap ones about $8 with the hardware you need. and you would only need the chains and eye hole screws

next is those cool atom rope ball perches. A simple one is what I designed although with some imagination more complicated ones can be created.

go to your pvc section at hardware or homedepot what have you and get a cross section piece. has 4 opening in the shape of a +. its about $4-5 and some rope depending on size and length itll be about $1-$2 or less a foot. I havent actually made it yet but its been designed. a thinner chain or rope can suspend it from the ceiling or what ever.

Any questions feel free to ask. Sorry about no pics hopefully I can get some up once I find my camera.

Here's one that worked for me.
Go to your bank if you have a checking account.
Ask them if they have a simple money market account you could start putting money in. Have them take a small amount out of your checking every month to put in the money mart account like $ 25. or $ 50.
This way you work savings into your budget. And I learned with saving money it's more getting into the habit of doing it because a small amount saved on a regular basis really adds up over the years.
Hope this helps.
