In the past I have used a grinder with with carbide disc to remove bark. But now have learned most remove bark by sandblasting. I have decent sandblasting equipment.
So my question is if basic silica sand is ok or do I need to use something else?
Thanks

Iā€™ve considered buying a sandblaster to refinish some furniture. Do you like it? They just donā€™t make stuff like they used to. I either have to pay an insane amount for wood furniture that is quality, or go for ply wood, and then if it gets a scuff itā€™s there forever (canā€™t repair as it canā€™t be sanded down/stained).

I never thought to sand down my parrots perches (I just use tree branches now). I learned the hard way that you need to wash them down as I had bugs all over. I donā€™t think the parrots minded.

I seem to remember hearing about the use of almond shells (all crunch up) as an alternative and natural substitute for sand blasting.
But I donā€™t know what would be wrong with sand either.

Silica sand is reportedly bird safe.

Not long ago when an old brick building in my area was being refurbished, ground walnut shells were used for sandblasting the brickwork. Supposedly the walnut shells cause less damage to the bricks than sand and are easier to clean up.

Maybe thatā€™s what I was thinking of..
That show that use to be on the History Channel ā€œAmerican Restoration ā€œ used it.
