BFA-Blue Fronted Amazon
Hi, My name is Salman and i have recently got a Blue Fronted Amazon-BFA :green:. His or Her name is Buddy.

First of all thank you so much for letting me be on this forum.
Secondly, is it important for us to know the gender of our bird?

This is my first time to have a pet. So please expect the silliest questions possible in this world. :D

Welcome and be welcomed, Salmon and Buddy.

It only becomes important about the sex of your parrot if she starts to lay eggs ( look up Egg Binding) or if his mating behavior during mating season becomes a problem.

I would strongly suggest you read and then read again the sticky notes at the top of the Amazon subform here on Parrotforums, the ones titled Amazon Body Language and he one titled I Love Amazons. They contain most, if not all, you need to know about living and loving parrots. Please be careful about information contained on other sites on the Internet, there is a lot of false information, old perspectives and just bad ideas floating out there.

A few things should be known right away. Use of Teflon coated cookware ( and that includes other non-stick coatings), kitchen appliances that have any sort of heating elements, like fryers, heaters, crock pots etc, should never be used around parrots. Why? Those coatings, when heated up, give off a gas that is highly toxic to birds. We hear the sad stories about new owners who were not aware of this, cooking dinner one night only to find their beloved parrot dead the next morning. Happens all the time.

Another thing - cats and dogs and parrots do not mix well. Parrots are prey animals, cats and dogs are predators. It may seem that Rover or ***** get along with the new parrot, but it only takes a literal split second for a cat or dog to kill your parrot. In fact cat saliva is very deadly to parrots, because it contains bacteria that parrots have no defense for, and even the parrot grooming itself after a cat has licked it can be enough to seriously harm your parrot.

All these and much much more are contained withing the forums here at Parrot Forums. A good idea is to go thru the sub forums and read the sticky threads at the top of each. Diet, housing, training, health and so much more are all there. I hope you take advantage of the information. Your parrot, a BFA, can easily live 60-70 years .if cared for properly. Its important to get off on the right footing as you begin his/her life with you. Please feel free to ask any and all questions, no matter how silly or uninformed they might seem.

Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your Amazon.

Because I'm dealing with health issues in my flock, I want to share tge importance of checking weights. Birds hide being sick, its instinctive. If you see any symptoms you should get your bird to an avain vet right away. Most sick burds will start loosing weight. So knowing what your burd should weigh is important. A digital kitchen scale set to grams works great. I recommend weigh your bird once a week. More than 3% weight-loss seek a veterinarian. To do % take weight lost divide by normal weight x 100 = % lost.

In addition to seeds and pellets, lots of fresh vegetables, leafy lettuces like romaine, and Swiss chard, a few fruits and berries, plums, blackberry, ect, occasionally some boiled egg, cooked oatmeal, cooked lentils, and cooked beans, cooked quinoa. Having a healthy diet with lost of varieties promotes a strong healthy immune system, and is enrichment for their minds.

This is a nice article that covers birds non verbal communication, normal behavior, and some common reasons they will bite.

A warm welcome to the forums, Salman and Buddy!! We thank you for joining and sharing the journey. Great advice above, and there are no silly questions!! :)

As so well stated above, it is not critical to know the DNA Sex of your Amazon, BUT, is can be very helpful! Minor adjustments to the diet of a Female can help limit egg binding and limiting sugar can easy a hormonal season for both sexes. I would recommend a DNA Sex test as part of your New Bird Avian Medical Professional's examination.

FYI: SunFlower seed is not recommended as part of an Amazon's diet as they contribute to the develop of Fatty Liver issues. Occasionally providing as a treat is okay.

Do you happen to know the age of your BFA?
