Safe ways to keep conures warm?

Hi everyone. Winter is fast a approaching for some of us in the forums. This will be our first winter with Boomer, our 8 month old sun conure. I need advice/suggestions on how to safely keep him warm in his cage. I cover him up with blankets but soon that won't be enough.

I was thinking of browsing heated perches on Amazin tonight. Any tips on what brand is safe/good? Any other routes I can take? What minimum temperature would conures tolerate? Share with us how you keep your birds warm and cozy on winters! Thank you in advance!

There have been a few threads about this lately, maybe you can find them and find some good advice. As for the heated perch, my bird loves his. Ive really only been able to find one brand/kind. It works really well. Just know they are big, so a small will be the perfect size for your lil sun. Best of luck, and stay warm!!

If your home gets dry during winter months, you can also add a warm air humidifier. It will evaporate warm moist air in to the area. A basic Vicks unit starts at $16, and it actually boils the water before it sends it out to the air, so you dont have to buy distilled water.

If you keep your house a little cooler in the winter, then your conure can adjust just fine to the cooler temps! My birds have endured temps within the 50's (F) without issues.

Birds have feathers, and they also have a lower of downy feathers that help to protect them against the cold. In short, unless you enjoy cold temps, chances are, your bird can handle them better than you!


You can gauge your birds body temp by their feathers.

Cold = fluffed up, shivering, feet covered, crouched like position

Hot = slick feathers, panting, wings spread slightly, somewhat extended body

Monica, WBAP, thanks for the tips! That's great to know parrots can adjust themselves to some extent. Luckily in Long Beach, CA where I live, it does not dip into the negatives. 30 is the coldest I've seen it and mostly averages between 50 and 60 in the coldest periods.

I've browsed perches but haven't settled on one. I am not happy with how short the cords are, might have to use an extension cord.

WBAP, good idea about the humidifier! I could use it regardless because I know conures need high humidity. I hesitated to purchase one because I heard it tends to build up mold which is dangerous. Is the Vicks unit prone to molding? How often did you use yours daily for Pritti?

I got one of those snuggle blanket things in the pet store but I doubt if he will need it in my apartment building...its always warm.
Those heated perches look cool though I saw them online....
