Okay, so I have two kinds. I have one that glows red and this one just burned out so I'm looking to replace it. For when they're sick, need extra warmth, or whatever. I didn't like that it glowed red because it seems that something akin to a nightlight wouldn't be great for their sleep.

Then I have another kind of bulb. It looks like it's coated in porcelain and omits no light. It smells awful when it heats up. Kind of like burning dust. So I make sure to really clean it off but it still smells like a hot hairdryer. I don't have the packaging so I'm not sure what brand, etc. they are.

Is there a safe and unsafe type of heat bulb to use with birds? It seems like the latter kind is giving off some kind of fumes when it heats up and of course this isn't good.

Just off the cuff without doing any research (yet) on heat lamps/bulbs, I want to address your concern about the "night light". Some birds like a night light in their room while they sleep. As long as it's not too bright I would not worry about it.

I'm sure someone will pop in with some more info...

EDIT: One of the first heat lamps I found.

One final link. I think this is the one I'd go with. http://www.avitec.com/Cage-Heaters-s/4.htm
