Hundreds Of B.C. Parrots Need Forever Homes As Sanctuary Closes

This is a parrot rescue place a couple of hours away from me. The lady who ran the place (sadly, recently deceased) took it upon herself to collect abused and unwanted parrots. At one point the facility was up to over 800 birds. Unfortunately, she steadfastly refused to adopt out any of them, and in my opinion, the numbers got beyond her ability to care for them properly.

While the article places a nice "spin" on the situation, the SPCA has investigated, and found that huge numbers of the birds are sick and/or dying (chlamydia being the primary infection), and many will have to be destroyed.

We've been following the situation, and it's heartbreaking. It's my fervent hope that at least some can be saved, and adopted to new, forever homes.

I had heard about this too, with the positive spin. Very sad to hear this was not the organization the media is making it out to be and that birds will have to be put down:( Chlamydia is one of the diseases an AV tests for at an initial exam, so it sounds to me as though this woman must not have been having proper testing done and/or had poor quarantine practices if it is running rampant through the sanctuary. Tragic the birds are the ones who will suffer from that. I hope the birds who are healthy enough to be saved can be treated and adopted into loving forever homes.

One last thing since you seem to have a insiders scoop, why are they contacting the previous owners?! These people gave these birds up, what makes them think they'll want them back and/or (in some cases) will be able to handle them any better now than they did before?

It takes a lot to make me get wet eyes. This does. Can't say more then this.

Sad so very very sad... :(

Hoarding situations almost always end up this way...

IF YOU CAN'T CARE FOR THEM, YOU AREN'T RESCUING ANYTHING... THEY'RE JUST GOING FROM THE FRYING PAN TO THE FIRE!

I've done a few hoarding calls. AND THEY'RE ALMOST UNIVERSALLY HORRIBLE. And usually the person is well intentioned, but mentally unstable, if not completely off their rockers... with no real concept of the harm they are doing/have done to the animals.

Some people believed that they were putting their parrot in a better place and didn't necessarily give them up because they didn't want them, other times they were placed there by a family member when the owner passed away as they thought a parrot paradise would be better (and these people are sometimes distraught that they put them in that situation). There have been a few parrots and owners reunited already as a bit of good news out of such a terrible situation.

There is a person that is in the beginning stages of the same thing (imho) who lives not far from us. I dont know her personally, but I've seen her postings and been to her websites and read up on her. She "rescues" and gives "sanctuary" to birds, mostly Ekkies. She purchases/"rescues" them from Craigslist and other sources and has set herself up as a non-profit to fund her habit. From what I know, she does not adopt out, she just collects. She does not seem to have any employees or outside help, other than family. Many donate to her NP with good intentions but when you see someone this breed specific with as many flags as this situation has...it just makes you wonder when it will implode
