Hiya everyone , I was wondering what age is a good age to start training? My lil girl is 3 months old still hand fed one lil consern I have is she has one of her toes ambutated since the skin didn't scale off and it stopped growing and had no blood circulation (?) . It was removed less then a month ago and I think she is still trying to get use to it.. She kinda chews on the stump and gets a lil upset. I have noticed she has a hard time holding on to my arm or the pearch sometimes. Am I correct in thinking that it is somethin she is still trying to get use to?

Should I hold off on any real trainin besides steppin up and talking until it gets better and she handles it better?

Right now she loves to play on the floor tearin up a wicker backet and such and it sounds like she is trying to repeat what we say to her such as love you and hello.

Also the shafts that cover the feathers about how long till she is totaly feathered? Is it alright to help her scratch off the shaft? She stilll has patches under her wings that are the soft dow feathers and where her gullit(?) I think thats the right word is still no feathers at all.

I know lots of question but figure the best way to find the answers it to read and ask others. Thank you soooo much for any help and for just taking the time to read my questions

Thanks!
Ginny

Not to sound rude, but shouldn't the breeder know about these things? But then, very irresponsible of him/her to let such a young chick go, so I wouldn't guess anything else.

Training is all about reading the bird. In this stage you can praice good behavior. The most important thing jus now is to bonding, without that you cant learn the bird anything. Good luck

train in play as you would a small child is best nothing to technical, i've a feeling this stumbling is because she is young

when nut is molting she will let me (very gentally) scratch off the sheaths that cover her feathers, if after a couple of gentle strokes they don't crumble, i leave it be! but i would stick to just her head an cheek ones, the others she can reach herself, as it is very painfull for the bird should we get it wrong

also welcome an PICTURES!!!!! please :)

I have to agree with the posts here. Spending time with your baby is no different then the time you would spend with a small child. Macaws are very smart and will pick up things pretty easy as they mature. Bond with your Macaw, get them used to their surroundings, take them outside with you, car trips, try to get them used to your life style. As far as the toe thing, don't worry about it, your Macaw will adjust and after time, your Macaw and you won't even remember it being an issue. I'm glad to hear your Macaw is getting so much of your Attn, you will really be able to take advantage from this in the years to come, you will not beleive how bonded your Macaw will become to you, it's really like no other pet relationship. Best of luck to you both. Joe

Thank you so much for the replys In a weeks time i have found that she is already bonding to My Husband and My self.. And already making different sounds that sound alot like love you too and what . She reminds me soo much of a child I love it.. My Adult kids think I am crazy but I am soo happy and love her so much... We took her to the grooming shop where the ladys that rasised her work and they were sooo happy to see her and one even told her boss "see i am not all that strange.. She spoils her baby like i do... She is such a lil love bug how can i not heheh..

She is starting to hold on the her perch so much better now and to watch her run is just to cute.. And dang for a baby that stumbles and rolls she is quick .. Reminds me of my Grandbabies just learning to walk.. I guess in a way thats exactly what she is :D

Agin thanks for the info I just want to make sure I am doing everything for her thats the best for her..

Heres a pic of her

( ok that shows bebe But if you click it it will go to a pic of Ruby)
Thank you!!!!
