Ruby Gold Macaw?

Hi everybody. Hubby and I have been looking at Macaws. There is a local breeder here who raises Ruby Golds. The father is a Ruby Macaw (Greenwing X Scarlet) and the mother is a Blue and Gold Macaw.

Anybody have any experience with these? Personality wise she says they are great birds getting all the good qualities without the beakiness of the scarlet.

She has green wing babies and blue and golds on eggs. We've been looking for a B&G, but are interested in this hybrid and I thought I'd ask if anybody has any experience with them.

On some levels a mac is a mac. Socialize and train the bird properly and it will be super interactive.

Don't handle it much and you've got a problem...

As far as hybrids go, I've worked with an evil Ruby.

And I've worked with several catalinas... which can be really good birds.

We really had our heart set on the B&Gs, but the more I see of the Ruby Gold the more I like him!

I have a deposit down with her already... This will be her 2nd clutch from these B&Gs and the last clutch was not viable. She expects a hatch in the next 2-3 weeks. She has ONE Ruby Gold that is not spoken for and I'm trying to decide if I want to switch it up before the hatch, or wait to see if the current clutch is viable.

I guess my biggest fear is that somebody will put $ down on the Ruby Gold and then the B&Gs wont hatch and it'll be too late to change my mind

I'm very much the same way. My birds go out with me all the time.

And getting them out and about makes a huge difference... I've said it for years. For starters, interacting with hundreds of strangers kinda makes interacting with strangers just something you do...

The more social contact they get, the more social they generally become.

If there is a secret (other than don't show fear to a big mac) this is it! Don't stuff them in a cage... get them out into the world.

This is exactly the macaw owners we intend to be!!! I work from home full time and have plenty of time to make sure he's not getting into mischief. I have a spot by my desk where we will build a playstand so he can be with me in my office.

We are super excited and can't wait! I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes by.

Currently we are living with a TAG who has completely won our hearts!!! He's a friends who is staying with us and has not been the best bird parent, but we're learning alot and training both bird and owner better! LOL

Hubby and I have both wanted a macaw since we were kids and are excited to finally be in a position to make the step toward owning one. We've done lots of research, visited with quite a few and visited quite a few potential rehomes before deciding on a baby.

Well that's really the thing in my opinion. Most folks don't handle or socialize their macs enough, and cage them too much...

Then they end up with a "problem bird."

The bird isn't the problem...

And mush macs are just amazing companion animals! You re gonna love it...

I've seen you post bout this before and wanted to ask about how well received the bird is by the establishments you take them into. I'm assuming you take them anywhere a dog would be allowed or..?

I remember there used to be a guy in hollywood that would ride around on his scooter with a BnG and GW on the back.

Well, obviously, you need to use a certain amount of discretion...

I got away with a lot more when I was in California. (Slightly more liberal than Texas!)

Most food places, unless they have like an outdoor patio seating area, frown on such things. Places like WalMart and grocery stores as well...

But mine goes with me to the laundrymat, and to Starbucks. (Where she waits patiently outside for me, when I'm folding clothes, or getting my coffee...)

We go for walks in the park, and when I'm out running errands, I generally take one.

Overall the reaction is pretty positive. Every once in awhile you run into someone who either tells you to leave, or is just a jerk in other ways...

If they tell me to leave, I leave. (I'm the one generally breaking "the rules" here. No reason for me to get huffy about it...)

A jerk is going to be a jerk. I either ignore them, or laugh at them...

The funniest one that comes immediately to mind (referring to Maggie, my GW) "WHY ISN'T THAT BIRD AT HOME IN A CAGE WHERE IT BELONGS?!"
The fact that he was dead serious and confrontational when he said it, made it all the more funny....

"Does that stick up your butt make it hard to walk?!"

Thats not my bird but the owner said he sees dogs in home depot so he figured why not. Nobody asked him to leave. Id do the same at home depot and see dogs there all the time, but probably wouldnt push my luck at a restaurant. There an owner on a FB page who puts the diaper suit/harness on his macaw and takes him to restaurants that he frequents. I guess it drills down to who you know and/or how much you are pushing your luck.
