Rosella Parrot- Pet store

I was wondering how Hardimos was doing but was afraid to ask:(
I think this was meant to be since you already had the cage for the new Rosella:)
Have you named him yet? I would love to see pictures!

O, I'm so glad you decided to take him! I think it was meant to be :D Even if he's never a "cuddly" bird, I'm sure he will be much happier in a home with someone who will talk to him and provide proper care. I'm not terribly familiar with Rosellas, but if they are indeed more "aviary" birds, then being in a calm, domestic home will be SO much easier for him than a hectic petshop. And not every bird is a cuddler, even the ones who are more of "pet" quality (as someone put it). Kiwi is not and probably never will be a "cuddly bird" like others of his kind on this forum, but he's a happy bird, and thats what is truly important :)

Good luck with your new guy, and I'm very interested to see some pics once he settles in! Oh and have you chosen a name for hi yet?

Kiwibird, I wanted to just say I realize you have many years experience with birds so I was hoping it didn't come across as if I didn't think you did :). Yeah, Raven is definitely happier being a non-cuddly guy also.

Im glad you decided to get him! A pet store sure isn't an ideal place for a bird. Best wishes :)

I haven't taken any pictures or named him yet. I've thought about taking a picture but I think I'll let him settle before I chase him around with a camera, haha! :D

Hardimos is coping well with his illness. His life has changed a lot since his diagnosis but he's adapted to his new lifestyle well has learnt what his limits are. I have a very strong bond with Hardimos so when I found out his illness was terminal I was inconsolable..The news just wouldn't sink in and I didn't feel he was ready to go...Thankfully, Hardimos has proved me right for now at least :)

I am so glad to hear that Hardimos is still doing well with his new limitations. Whew, I was just thinking about him a couple of days ago and hoping that he was doing well.

Awh, thank you Terry :) I'll keep you updated!

I couldn't resist not taking a photo of the Rosella during his first day in his new home so I quickly snuck a few photos! I'll upload them in a bit! :D

Didn't take it that way at all:). It is actually a valid point that not every bird is suitable as a cuddle monster who want your affection all the time. It's just that not every person necessarily seeks or needs those traits in a bird to be happy with them in their home. I appreciate Kiwi's relative independence, and he is still a wonderful companion even though he doesn't let anyone pet him or anything like that. He's still a happy and interactive boy. Hopefully her new Rosella will be most importantly happy first, and everything else will be icing on the cake so to speak :D

Weeeeeee! I'm so glad you got him! Well done! Congratulations! Best news I've heard in a fortnight!

I think you should call him 'Patricia' after me. :D (NB. No one calls their kids or their pets 'Patricia' any more and I'm on a one-woman campaign to change that - it's a decent name and not attached to any evil or unnatural pursuits so...!)

Anyway, it could be this little guy will make a nice friend for Hardimos, bless him. It would be nice to think they could share things and be birds together, wouldn't it? I know people keep saying Rosellas are not pet material, but I've known quite a few who made great pets, learning a word or two and quite happy to sit on their owners' shoulders or on a perch nearby. It all depends on how much time you can manage to invest in him as he grows older. If you can't manage all that much, well that's OK too. So long as he's not in a petshop without anybody to love him!

Thank you for taking this boy home, Kitty. You ROCK!!! :)

LOL Trish... My dad does have a CRAZY Jack Russell named Patty! :11:

Some human names just don't go well for animal names... Nonetheless, I have heard of a couple birds (and I'm sure other pets out there) named Julie :(

I'm not particularly crazy about my name, but when I hear it as a pet name it seems so strange :52:

My mom named my childhood dog "Tasha"... Every time I heard of a girl named Tasha I'd think, 'wow that's a dog name' lol.
For the record, as an adult I no longer think that. It's a pretty name :)

YAY!!....I am thrilled you went back and brought him home.....

looking forward to some pics!!

Haha, I'll put 'Patricia' in the name hat!

I'm so excited at the moment!! As I was eating my dinner in the same room as the Rosella, he began to make some usual clicking and whistling noises at me. I slowly approached his cage and offered him a piece of grated carrot through the bars. I expected him to run away like he did when approached in the pet store...but he ran straight over to my hand and snatched the food! :D I sat next to his cage and offered him various fruits and vegetables, he couldn't get enough of them!
I'm absolutely chuffed! I honestly though it would take AGES for me to get him to eat from my fingers through the bars because he's so frightened and nervous. The poor guy was only give seed mix at the pet store so I'm guessing he must've been desperate for something fresh :(

Here's a picture of him. He's quite a big boy, well bigger than another Rosella I've seen anyway!

WOW! He's gorgeous! I think I understand why you couldn't stop thinking about this little guy.

See, he's already happy you brought him home- he even wants to steal your dinner (thats a sign of love from any parrot:09:). I'm betting if you just have a little patience with him, he will be a lovely companion. And I think birds are smart enough to "know" when they are wanted. He was probably so sad being in that store for so long without anyone wanting him (especially after being someones pet for 5 years). Good luck with him, and definitely keep us updated!

He is gorgeous! And he obviously knows he is in a great place:) That is wonderful progress already.

Wow! He's a Crimson Rosella! Usually, it's Eastern Rosellas you see in shops etc. They're also more commonly seen in the wild because they tend to live in more open woodland rather than what's called 'wet sclerophyll' forest (ie has a canopy but isn't quite rainforest). That's where the Crimson Rosellas usually live. This guy has an even more beguiling song than his cousin and I think you're really, really lucky to have found each other. I can't wait till he starts to relax and settle in! Thanks for the pic - he's a beauty! :)

Trish, how many species of Rosellas have you seen where you live? I'd love to see a Pale Headed. I'm a sucker for blue/yellow in birds for some reason. Wonder if they're rarely seen in the wild, or only more remote places?

Kitty, that Crimson is gorgeous :)

We have Eastern and Crimson regularly visiting our yard, but Pale Headeds are found only in Queensland in the north-eastern part of the country. HOWEVER, I was attending a picnic one day at a local park when, right before my eyes, a Pale Headed Rosella flew down into the water easement to get a drink. As I stood and watched, a flock of twenty or so Eastern Rosellas landed to join him. They all drank and bathed noisily and then flew off, leaving the Pale Head perched in a tree above my head. He wasn't tame at all, because he flew off as I moved slowly toward him, but my guess is that he was an aviary escapee. I looked for him on and off for weeks after that, but never saw him again. Neither did I see any ads in the paper or flyers for a lost bird. I often wonder how he got there and whether he found his way home again.

Wow Betrisher, You're so lucky to see these beautiful birds in the wild!

After I'd spotted him in the pet store a few days ago I did some research into Rosella's. I suspected he was a Crimson because of his size and colours but I think he could be a cross breed because the back of his head is yellow.

It was a nice sunny day today so I took his cage outside...He really enjoyed basking in the sun and getting some fresh air. He didn't have any toys in his cage at the pet store and I wasn't sure if he'd be very playful but I gave him a few of Hardimos's old toys and he loves them to bits! While he was outside I put a small tray of water in the bottom of his cage, he jumped straight in there and had a bath...He looked so cute!
He's still very frightened of people but I can already tell his quality of life has dramatically improved. He seems so much happier and I'm so glad I decided to buy him :)
