Rose-Ringed Parakeet
Hello everyone!

My Rose-ringed Parakeet is losing feathers next to his right eye. It started 1-2 moths ago. The feathers next to left eye are ok. That's never happened before. His behavior is normal. He eats, drinks, has a lot of energy.. What can be the reason?

Poland is a beautiful Country and there are a member or two here from your County.

I do not have a background with this species of Parrot. That said, I have a fairly lengthily background with Parrots. The eye and the area around looks clear without scales or like skin issues as does the area where the feather loss has occurred. It is possible that it maybe little more than part of a Spring Molt. Such feather loss on and around the head tends to be in sections /spots commonly slightly expanded by your Parrot scratching the area with its claw. This commonly results in the additional loss of a few other feathers in the same area.

With great hope, one of our members with more expertise will provide more insight.

So, how old is you Rose-ringed?

This can happen with a sinus infection, even if you see no discharge from nose.

I would have an avain vet check.

Also foods with vitamin A help a lot with Respiratory issues. Birds with low vitamin A levels are more prone to Respiratory issues. What do you feed?

Can you add peppers, carrots, pumpkin, cooked sweet potato? Leafy greens.

The fact that the feather loss is adjacent to the nares (nostrils) is concerning. I would have a qualified avian vet check him out. It certainly is not a natural feather loss.

Thank you for all your answers and thank you for your kind words about my country. In Poland we love parrots so much. :)

Igor (his name) will have 5th birthday on the first of June. Of course, I want to take him to the vet, but because of the current situation, I mean #stayhome, I want to wait until everything calms down, so I would like to know how serious the situation is.

I get the impression that Igor sometimes breathes quite loudly, as if he had a runny nose. So it may also be related to this case..

The last time I was with him at the vet in August last year and everything was fine (he got praise from the vet and they even liked each other quite well). He had all the preventive examinations (faeces, blood, nasal swab) at that time.

About his eating.. Every day for breakfast he gets a plate with something from this (depends on season): banana, apple, pomegranate, pear, strawberry, mandarine, kiwi, tomato, red/yellow pepper, cucumber, carrot, potato, corn, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, sprouts and naturally squeezed orange juice (e.g smth like this https://imgur.com/bj95gBS). In addition, he also has a bowl with Versele-Laga African Parakeet Loro Parque Mix (he doesn't like another one) and he doesn't want to eat granules either. To be honest, his most common choice is his versele-laga and eating white millet from it..
