We only had you for a week, little buddy, but you were a great little bird.

My son is absolutely devastated. We're headed to the vet in a little bit to have a necropsy done to find out what happened and make sure it wasn't because of a contagious illness.

Oh no! Is the other budgie alright? I would actually take him with you as well just to get fecal smears and maybe a nose/throat/crop culture so you can catch it early if it was an infection...

I'm just so sorry for your son, he was being so responsible and loving his budgies. I hope he continues to care for his other little guy.

I am so very sorry. Sending hugs to your son.

Thanks guys.

Ellen, both budgies were at the vet last Monday for their new bird exams, and most of the lab work has already come back and it's all good. Liam still looks good. We should have the necropsy results by the end of the day today, which will give us some answers.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to explain to the young.

So so sorry.
He died homed, and loved.
That counts for a lot.
Sympathy to you all.

Im so sorry. Hugs to you and your son. Please let us know the results of the necropsy.

Dr J just called. He diagnosed maladaption, which he said is the bird version of SIDS, and that some young birds just don't handle the stress of going from a breeder to a home very well (and in his case breeder to pet store to home). My son was really upset and worried that he'd done something wrong and failed the bird, and that he would somehow mess up with Liam, and the vet assured him that he did nothing wrong and sometimes these things just happen.

Also, Gail, I showed him this thread and when he got to what you wrote he smiled for the first time since this morning. Those were exactly the words he needed to read. Thank you.

So sorry for your boy, this could be a traumatic experience for him. I know you will explain things to him so he knows it was not his fault, and tell him about the Rainbow Bridge, where all our parrots who have left us go. Angelo is in good company with my Maxie, who loves to make new friends with budgies . He is showing Angelo where the juicyest fruits are and the teastiest nuts.

And tell your son that Angelo has a place just for him in a memorial at a big college that specializes in helping sick parrots. Cornell University

Thank you Wrench, and everybody else. My son is doing a little bit better tonight. We've brought Angelo home and put him in the freezer and we will have a funeral for him this weekend. We have a little pet cemetery in the back yard where MrC's girls' childhood pets (a few rats, several fish, two cockatiels and another parakeet) are buried. Angelo will join them when my son is ready to have the funeral.

I'm glad that your son is doing better, and that it was not anything contagious to the other budgie. This is such a horrible thing to go through under any circumstances, and to have a baby suddenly pass away so soon is very hurtful and confusing. I'm so glad you have a vet that is willing to explain what happened to your son, he sounds like an amazing vet.

I am so sorry, Beatrice. My deepest condolences to your son who was confronted with such an early and devastating loss. Angelo will be missed and always occupy a special place in your son's heart.

Thank you. :)

Ellen, my vet really is amazing. This is just a small part of why. :)

Sorry for your loss. I hope your son understands it wasn't his fault.
