Parrots
2 x ring neck parraots
I just received these 2 ringnecks from my father whom passed away 2 weeks ago.
I am unsure of age or sex.
Any help with looking after them would be terrific.
I have been feeding them parrot and fresh fruit daily.

They wont let us touch them or go near them but for the last week they have been coming to side of cage to watch what we are doing. We talk to them constantly and they even make chatter noises back sometimes.

My main question is what I need to and shouldnt do with them.

Their cage isnt the biggest at the moment but we are getting them a large one this week.
They were in a large avairy with 2 green ringnecks but they didnt come to us.

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear of your father's passing.....

If they've never been handled, I don't know if you'll be able to tame them or not, because birds that have bonded with each other usually prefer each other's company to that of humans.....that being said, you can always try by talking with them and offering treats (nuts, fruits, seeds, etc.) through the cage bars...their curiosity does show that they're not necessarily opposed to you, so there may be a possibility.....

When you change cages, if they won't allow you to handle them, make the change at night, when you can turn off all the lights, grab them one at a time &b place them in their new cage...might be wise to towel them because ringneck bites are not fun.....

As to food, seed mixes should be less than 40% of their diet, with fresh veggies and fruits making up the rest.....they can also eat cooked meats (not processed), chicken, beef, pork & fish, and any other local meats that you might eat.....and.....fresh meal worms, if you have a source.....

Most everything you eat, they can eat, with the exception of avocados, chocolate and caffeinated products.....also, salted foods should be kept to a minimum because parrots do not easily pass salt like most other animals.....

Good luck.....

By the way, they're a couple of nice looking birds.....

hi i am sue and sorry about your loss well i have 3 ringnecks i may be of some assistance the one with the ring is male for sure lol that is a start . Pasta is a favorite among all my birds seeds , fresh fruit apples ,kiwi seem to be favourites. Most ringneck prefer to bath rather than be sprayed so if you have a large shallow bowl they love to play in the water. they are very playful as well i have alot of toys available mostly practice golf balls bright orange ones they like them we play fetch alot i do most of the fetching . back to food peanuts are a great treat ginger snaps lol . You do have some very beautiful birds just watch for depression did your father have them long the birds can feel that loss as well i am only am email away if you have any questions [email protected]

They are beautiful birds. I'm sorry to hear you lost your father though.

If you've never had birds before Teflon or similar non-stick products are a big no-no. The fumes can kill and also don't use a self clean cycle on your oven.

The blue is def. a male. The lutino could be a male if it's very young, otherwise it's a female. I think they get the rings by the time they are 2 or 3 years old.

Thank you everyone for your comments.
Am writing a list down of what to do and not to do with them.
Will get some toys for them this week.

The yellow one seems to be around the same size as the blue boy one so we hoping is little girl.
They smooch upto each other and he is forever showing off in front of her/him like puffing up and doing back flips in cage from top to side. Not sure what that is.

I actually managed to touch the yellow one this morning through the cage dont know who got the bigger shock her/him or myself but that is a start.

Didnt know they liked water so will definetly place a water bowl in there for them to play in.

Thank you again
Juliette

Sorry to hear about you father, my deepest condolences.
Everything is new and strange to the birds, they are obviously scared and wary.
You are doing it correctly by talking baby steps, one day at a time.

Please keep us updated

Sorry for the loss of your Dad. and Congratulations for a beautiful couple of IRN. They are such beautiful birds. I am also new to IRN rearing with only one in my possesion (RICH). Just read on to the posts in here and there a lot of kind members who will guide you ( and me) in taking care of our birds. :)
