My heart is broken, and yet I am thrilled with my new flock member. I was in the evil pet store yesterday with a good friend, and she noticed a turquoise/cinnamon green cheeked conure, which is an uncommon color particularly here in Hawaii. I have been looking for one, since I breed them and my turquoise/cinnamon is a female, so she does not produce visually turquoise/cinnamon babies. Anyway I asked about the price and was shocked to find out it was actually reasonable, and that he was actually about a year and a half old. I took him home. Getting him here has broken my heart. This is a bird who loves people. He is tense out of his mind, so confused, and still Sooooooooooo sweet! He clearly was part of a family. He speaks, he says "good bird" "pretty bird" "kiss kiss" "whacha doin?" "Hi" And several other things I have not been able to decipher. He is a shoulder bird to the max, and is having a hard time understanding why I won't let him be there all the time (the reason is he bites when I try to take him down). He loves scritches and has let me pet his whole body, though I have not yet tried under the wings. He steps up for anyone even from his cage, he follows you if you leave him...
Guessing about the reason he was available
-"not enough time to give him the attention he deserves" (and you know how I feel about that excuse!)
-the kids weren't taking care of him (have I mentioned what I think of adults who let little kids get intelligent emotional pets and then rehome them when the kids don't live up to it? That's how Cache came to me)
-we are moving (9times out of 10 you CAN take your bird with you if you just put in a little effort. Sorry you didn't plan ahead AT ALL...)
-It bites (yes, he does, he clearly needs bite pressure training, I could tell that within 5 minutes of playing with him. He is already learning. Sorry you couldn't take the time to train him.)
I am pretty emotional about the little guy. I didn't plan on him, but I do not regret him at all. I am sick with sorrow that a bird used to so much love got dumped with the evil pet store and is going through this!
We are working on a name and will get the sample for the DNA test tonight. Any name suggestions? We like to stick with a sort of patriotic/military/historic type theme, but lots of our birds go by nick names (such as Flick is actually spelled FLC and stands for frontal load carrier or fighting load carrier). Suggestions welcome! Currently on the list are Arizona, Tex, and Alamo.
Sorry the colors are bad, he is so pretty in person!
