Respiratory problem

Hi all,

I have a blue/gold macaw in one room and an umbrella cockatoo in a separate room. My problem is no matter how much we mist the cockatoo her dander will find its way into the room where our macaw is. From time to time the macaw's nares will get red and you can tell she gets a little congested. We used to give her ornacycline but found that was not good for them and are now having a difficult time finding it. What else is a good and safe medicine which we can give her from time to time when this problem happens?

Hi Glenn,

I would strongly recommend AGAINST any type of medicine, unless it was prescribed by your avian vet.

Blue & Golds can be VERY sensitive to dander, especially cockatoos. I would suggest looking into a good air filter.

I too second the good air filter. You can mist all you want - your 'too will forever produce dander and it's why people don't recommend getting a macaw and a 'too.

If you get a good air filter and maintain it properly etc, your macaw will certainly feel the difference (and even if you don't notice the dander too much yourself - you will too!).
You can get really smart and sleek ones that work really well too, so they're not super invasive.

Medicines play havoc on birds, so please please don't use them unless absolutely necessary.
