I hope she makes it. It makes me a little angry they had the gall to charge you to save these birds's lives, but done is done and at least now they have a fighting chance. This is why I won't even look at anymore birds in those places. It's too sad.

yup, you and me both!, even my husband Dave said, "they should have given you the birds, and you return them when they are better, and they should pay you for your time and services"

it is sad, but I would rather try than turn my back on them, that would make me no better than they are.

I really feel like smacking them up side the head.

what I find interesting, is they are realizing that more and more birds and reptiles are getting sick.....I TOLD THEM MONTHS AGO!! about Sugar, but I never saw Buttercup or Tiny in the store.

they usually charge around $80 for a canary, so in there twisted minds, they are giving me a deal, yeah right!.....no worries, the manager and I get along really really well, so I will be talking to him about some kind of compensation, he bends the rules for me cause I am a very good customer.

I just wish we had a very good pet store!!!

I'll pray that she makes it through this!!! She's tough like Puff is!

mikey, can you think of anything else I should be doing??? I'm wracking my brain.

I think you're doing everything you needed to do to help Buttercup. Sometimes they're just too far gone to save them. You can only hope for the best and stay positive and tell Buttercup to be strong to fight through this.

wishing there was an expectorant for birds....

How is she this morning?

YES!! I just checked on her, and she chirped at me with a voice!!...it's better than yesterday for sure.Yesterday she was terribly raspy, her voice was barely audible, but today it was stronger. I also noticed she'n not breathing out of her mouth this morning.
I would say a 25% improvement. I gave Buttercup some Guardian Angel today on her seed. It's an excellent product that helps heal ill birds.

she is still puffy but that is to be expected.

Sugar is still very crackly, but not scratching as much. I'm putting a heat lamp on her today, she's not puffy but I think she could use the heat to help her conserve some energy.

Tiny is doing fine, she was the best out of the three, and is doing well. I'm not sure what her issue was at the store, but I really don't see anything wrong with her other than her beak curved down a bit(lack of nutrition).

I couldn't wait to hear about Buttercup! Sooo glad she is holding on! You're doing such a great job for them!!!

now she's moving around more and her wheezing has increased....silly bird....but has slightly improved.

I am very happy to learn Buttercup is doing much better. I think she will make it and recover. Such a little fighter she is and I am glad she is responding to you and seems to be forming a bond to you. I have a question for you because I have always wondered.

With a bird as ill as Buttercup I am wondering after they recover will their health be compromised and they are then delicate for the rest of their lives? I have always wondered if the recovered bird's health is then weaker.

I am sure some illnesses and disease this would be true but I am still in the learning of which ones and what illnesses and diseases compromise the bird for life.

Thank you for telling me about your Canary experiences. I too wish I lived closer as I could see us being friends face to face and sharing all our bird experiences over a nice lunch, dinner, breakfast..over eating food. LOL.

me too Rebecca!....we seem to be on the same page you and I.
I just seem to know about mites, and the affects it has on birds. I have been dealing with them for 4 years now, so you learn a lot!!

once a bird has air sac mites, it's there to stay, unfortunately. they may be dead inside, but there are some that lay dormant, it is only until the birds immune system is weakened, whether thru illness, stress, or some other factor
that makes them weak, that is when the dormant one become active.
not only when they multiply they obstruct their airways, they also feed off the bird from the inside out:eek:

they suck on them and can cause internal bleeding. I just learned this from my vet not too long ago.
this is why I give them iron drops as well, just one drop in their drinking water 1-2 times per week until they are healthy again.

I would never do this on my own, I had a very good friend of mine who was an AMAZING breeder, who had her degree in avian science and medicine, and she taught me so much!!. I absorbed everything like a sponge and have never forgotten anything she taught me.

I just came home(it's 3:45pm) and she is breathing so fast!!!!, and clicking at the same time, her eyes are closing trying to get some sleep, but can't.
SHE MUST BE SOOOOOO TIRED....I hate seeing her suffer like this.
she's better in the morning, but as the day progresses she worsens dramatically.

I can't even hand feed her. it stresses her out so much, that she just lays on the bottom of the cage wheezing, gasping for air, until she regains some strength, and it takes a minute or two......I just don't know.
I HATE SEEING HER SUFFER, but I took her in hopes that I could help. she is so clogged with dead mites she is having a terrible time breathing.

I have spent countless hours pouring over info on air sac mites, trying to find something that will dissolve them, but I have come across nothing, other than what I have given her.

that is what is so frustrating, caught early Ivermectin will help, but if left too late it will kill them but then they clog their airways and they slowly suffocate.

it's like having pneumonia, caught early it's treatable, but left too late it's fatal.

I consider one of the more knowledgeable small bird breeder I know and think it very awesome you not only share your knowledge but will seek the help and information when you need questions answered. Dr. Blair is like that also. I really respect her that if she is not sure or does not know she will admit she doesn't know and will take that extra step of getting the answers. It takes a person with high integrity and confidence to be able to admit "I don't know" and to know when to seek the knowledge without ego getting in the way.

I will admit one shameful fact to you. I have lived in Minnesota all my life except when I was in the Navy and I have never been to Canada. My father use to visit Canada once a year for salmon fishing so even he has visited our neighbors to the north but the farthest I have gone north is Ely MN. Maybe someday I can correct my having never visited Canada with a visit. LOL.

Buttercup is up and down. She is good in the morning and gets worse throughout the day. I am so sorry you have to see your charge suffer so. That cannot be easy but your dedication and excellent care helps her. I think she knows this and I think she is fighting for you. I wonder when a person decides enough is enough and takes that step to help them cross the rainbow bridge. That would be so difficult for me knowing when you have to take that last step because I don't want to give up on them. Whatever happens Beth you did your best for her and you will continue to do for her what you can. I pray she makes it though this very difficult stage of recovery.

thanks Rebecca, you are too kind. Buttercup just died not 15 minutes ago.
I am relieved that she is out of her misery, but sad at the same time.

life is just unfair.
I posted her death in the bereavement section.

I am glad you are trying to save them. It makes me mad they charged you anything for the birds. Yes, they gave them to you dirt cheap but they should have let you keep the money so you can spend it on making them better. Birds in petstores are expensive and yes canaries are expensive when compared to other song birds.
