I am very happy to learn Buttercup is doing much better. I think she will make it and recover. Such a little fighter she is and I am glad she is responding to you and seems to be forming a bond to you. I have a question for you because I have always wondered.
With a bird as ill as Buttercup I am wondering after they recover will their health be compromised and they are then delicate for the rest of their lives? I have always wondered if the recovered bird's health is then weaker.
I am sure some illnesses and disease this would be true but I am still in the learning of which ones and what illnesses and diseases compromise the bird for life.
Thank you for telling me about your Canary experiences. I too wish I lived closer as I could see us being friends face to face and sharing all our bird experiences over a nice lunch, dinner, breakfast..over eating food. LOL.
me too Rebecca!....we seem to be on the same page you and I.
I just seem to know about mites, and the affects it has on birds. I have been dealing with them for 4 years now, so you learn a lot!!
once a bird has air sac mites, it's there to stay, unfortunately. they may be dead inside, but there are some that lay dormant, it is only until the birds immune system is weakened, whether thru illness, stress, or some other factor
that makes them weak, that is when the dormant one become active.
not only when they multiply they obstruct their airways, they also feed off the bird from the inside out
they suck on them and can cause internal bleeding. I just learned this from my vet not too long ago.
this is why I give them iron drops as well, just one drop in their drinking water 1-2 times per week until they are healthy again.
I would never do this on my own, I had a very good friend of mine who was an AMAZING breeder, who had her degree in avian science and medicine, and she taught me so much!!. I absorbed everything like a sponge and have never forgotten anything she taught me.
