So I was Petco about 2-3 months ago and there was a jenday for sale. I had seen him there for a couple months. When I saw him this time his break was over grown and crack. My wife and I already had a gcc and sunburst and both were great addition to the family. So we asked to see him. When the employee went to grab him he had to use a towel to grab him. He was very vocal and scared when they tried to get him. So we decided to get him and save him from the store. We brought him home and introduce him to the other birds. They get along with each other.

For the first week he shy around everyone. After a week he climbed out of the cage once. Since then he does not want to come out by himself. He is jumping whenever someone goes by the cage. He screams all the time. When I put my hand in to brings the birds out he will either fly around the cage or bite as hard as he can.

I've tried wrapping him up and just "cuddle" with him ever other day. And then I place him on the parrot's gym. When we are cuddling he still try to bite me.

I don't want to give up on him but he is taking the joy out of being a parrot owner. Any ideas on how to help him?

First of all, you should ALWAYS practice quarantine!!!!! A lot of pet store birds have diseases that you do not know about...Second, there's a difference between rescue and purchasing. When you purchase from them, your only fueling their profit as most of those employees they hire don't have the slightest idea about birds. Third, it takes time to get a bird to trust you, it doesn't happen over night, especially one that is frightened!

You should make him a appointment to see a vet about his beak issue and check for his health status. Then just be patient with him and work with him. Watch videos such as clicker training. I know how hard it is to have a conure like that cause I had one once that does the same thing like he does. But mine was paired up with another bird before I brought them both home. One was simple to train and he was problematic so I just let him do what he wants, they were breeding stocks from the breeder. But I never bred them as I didn't care to have more of them around....lol.....Because they've been together for so long, I couldn't separate them apart as they enjoy each other's company so I left him alone and never push the issue. We were able to train one out of the two at least, she was more friendlier and flies to us on command.

Why does the jenday have an overgrown beak? This is typically a sign of health problems.

Try and put yourself into your jendays position. Imagine, if you will, being wrapped up in a blanket and "cuddled" by a bear/tiger/lion (any large creature you are afraid of). If you can imagine, it's a very scary experience!

I agree about the clicker training. Clicker training is about making *every* experience between you and your bird a positive one. It's a great way to teach your bird to enjoy your company, and if you do it right, you can also learn about your birds behaviors. Parrots have likes and dislikes as well. They may not always want to do what you want to do, so you need to learn to respect their boundaries while also teaching them to enjoy being with you.
