Hi everyone, after extensive research, I have decided to go on a journey to get an Amazon parrot! However, all the breeders I've found are...sketchy to say the least. I went to two bird stores where the parrots were on seed diets and in horrible conditions, and the breeders I have managed to discover on Facebook treat their birds the same way! Am I going crazy, or are reputable breeders just that hard to find?

I'm looking for a female Amazon who is not a member of the "hot three," possibly a red-lored or a lilac-crowned (and especially a vinaceous if I'm lucky enough to find one). Right now, it seems like my only choices are going to be Bird Paradise or Todd Marcus Birds Exotic, as they seem to at least possess decent care and facilities. But I'd much rather find a smaller breeder who specializes in well-socialized and properly cared-for Amazons. Thank you!

I would look for a bird fair/expo/show where dealers and breeders attend and set up exhibits to sell merchandise and birds. At the very least you will meet breeders there. You may have to travel to another state to attend a show but it's worth it.

Contact the North AmericanParrot Society. Google them for contract information about reputable breeders. District 1 includes the Northeast US. There's contact information for that director on their website.

Local certifed avian Veterinarians may be able to help you find a breeder

This is great advice, thank you so much. Do you know where I can reliably look for bird fair/expo/shows? I will try to contact the North American Parrot Society and local certified avian veterinarians in the meantime.

Sorry I just reread the title of your post.
Please forgive an unobservant old codger
Google bird expos or bird shows and also do the same on social media. Should give you some leads.

Google "bird fair expo". The Northeast US isn't where most are held so you may have to travel but I assume you're going to make a considerable investment in a baby Amazon and it would be worth it to be open to traveling. There was an expo in PA at the end of January.
There's an expo in NH in April Birds of a Feather Avicultural Society.

I got Salty, a yellow shoulder amazon at parrots of the world, in Nassau county, long island. They usually have different species available, but NOT CHEAP! Decent place too.
