I have always been against inbreeding of dogs and horses etc and as i am relatively new to birds i haven't really given it a thought until now. I regularly see bonded breeding pairs of birds that are listed as related and people obviously are not ashamed of this fact... I am baffled as to why anyone would do it? Could anyone enlighten me? Share thoughts and opinions...

We cant import birds here so i understand some species are rather limited but is it not just setting the species up for failure by breeding a related pair anyway?

Inbreeding is not good for the future of Aviculture effectively. There's an idiot born everyday unfortunately. I don't know why anyone would do this.

You see this done quite often and it's very sad thing to happen. Some people just don't know any better.

Just don't forget that many of the color mutations sought after parrots may only be available because of inbreeding taking place at some point.

Yes those were done by inbreeding but usually not siblings.

But there's risks involved!!!! That's why I would never do it. But your point is?????

How could it make me a hypocrite to not liking inbreeding??? Not saying I don't like the colors of some of the parrots we have now days but there are risks involved.

That shouldn't make it right in my opinion

If you (and I mean that generically, not you specifically) are against something, yet willingly accept the benefits of it, that's hypocritical. Being against inbreeding and then going out and buying a bird whose color is the result of inbreeding is hypocritical.
And I do get that there are gray areas and that's one reason why I said "could" make you a hypocrite rather than "does" make you a hypocrite.

So your basically saying should not go against it where people should do so because it's acceptable due to something that's already been done before? Otherwise it "could" make anyone a hypocrite for not accepting it.

I'm sorry but I don't see it that way, especially with those that have no experience nor the understanding of inbreeding for mutation purposes. While those type of people can further degrade and causing further harm in their offspring and then mixed into the general population, I feel that is wrong. All those inbreeding pairs were specifically chosen by those who actually understands how genetics works, not just by any joe who understands absolutely nothing and pair them up anyways. But this is just my opinion.

Sorry, I can't make heads or tails of that.

There's also a difference between inbreeding and line breeding.

The fact is we wouldn't have pure bred dogs or color mutations without inbreeding and line breeding. It shouldn't be done by just anyone, but by the right breeder it isn't a bad thing.

I think I get where MikeyTN is confused about what I'm saying.
I said "don't be too against it" and I think he took that and turned into 'you should be for it' which is not at all what I said or meant.

No I didnt get your words confused. If someone says something back at you, you report them even though its just a joke but its fine for you to call someone a hypocrite, let me take that back, "could" be a hypocrite and im not supposed to get upset or anyone else for that matter.
