Rehoming Green Cheek

Hello,

I have to rehome my green cheek conure. I got a new job and he will be home alone most of the day. I had to make the decision to rehome him. I am having issues finding someone suitable on Craigslist. I am in the Chicagoland area. If anyone is interested or knows any resources that would help me rehome him please let me know. He is a male, 2 years old, healthy. He is friendly but not hand tame as in he will not go on a hand but loves to hang out on your shoulder or clothes. Any help will be appreciated.

Why do you have to rehome him?

Can't you just find ways to keep him occupied while you're at work? (toys, music etc)

Then you can just spend time with him when you get home from work.

Skittys Daddy - I do leave the tv on for him and he also has lots of toys. I'm gone around 11-12 hours a day for work, and sometimes I like to find time for people in my life after that as well. I just don't think it's fair to the bird to have him alone literally all day. I haven't had him for a very long time, and when I got him I wasn't expecting to get a new job opportunity.

Ah, I didn't realize it was an 11-12hr job. That does make it difficult.

I've never owned a green cheek. But one of the benefits of having a sun conure is they need at least 11-14hrs of sleep a night which makes figuring them into your day more feasible.

If I ever lost my disability (highly doubtful, since I've been disabled since childhood) but I like to plan for the worst- if I ever had to go to work I could make it fit- just go to sleep when he does, sleep for 5-6hrs and then work for 8hrs and be back in time to wake him up.

Fortunately, I have no social life. I HATE people, I prefer the company of birds, tbh.

I feel so bad about this as I'm sitting on the couch with the bird on my shoulder writing this. The job itself is from 8 to 5 officially but there is an hour commute each way and I sometimes have to stay late.
I would love to keep him, but I really think it will be best if someone who has the time and is at home most of the day takes him. I know I will miss him, but I hope he won't miss me too much and instead gets busy exploring new surroundings once I find someone suitable!
By the way Skitty (I assume that's your birds name Skittys Daddy) is adorable!

Actually, his name is "Skittles", but I call him 'Skitty' or 'Skit' for short. He seems to really like the nicknames. But thank you. Its the result of a very healthy diet.

As far as your situation goes- I don't really know what to say- but I'd just make sure he goes to a good home if you end up having to do that. People can be very deceptive when replying to ads (and people placing them as well). So keep that in mind.

I just think, and this is just my opinion, but if it were me I'd try exhausting all other options. Maybe even try it out for a bit- see how he adjusts to you working- if not then do the rehoming- or maybe get him a friend to keep him company.

I'd just be sure you can find a proper home (like someone you know well or that you can be confident in.)

I've had a nanday conures in the past and she wasn't tame at all when I got her but everyday I would try to just sit next to her cage and take her out until she eventually just started coming straight to my hand and I taught her to give me kisses! Anyways I have a spacious home (no cats) with lots of time to dedicate to a bird I've been wanting since my other passed away, let me know!

Thank you all. I was able to rehome him with one of my prospects. They are a retired bird loving couple who are home all day long. I feel very sad about this but it is for the best. No birds for me until I can fully commit and be home most of the time. Thank you all for your help.

I'm glad it all worked out.

I recently saw a gold capped conure on CL that a couple the next town over and we are twin cities- I am soooo tempted to snatch him up cause I can tell he is so very well taken care of - but with Skitty and my small apartment it just wouldn't work out.

I wish I had more living space.
