Hello guys!
So, part of the reason why I joined this forum was to look at recipes and share some of my own! I dug up an old recipe of mine to share with you guys.
Name: Quickie Bird Bread
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cook Time: 20 Minutes
Target Audience: Macaws, Amazons, Greys... can be adapted for smaller parrots by tweaking the size of the fresh ingredients.
----------------------------------------
Ingredients
1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
1/3 cup milk
2 eggs
1/2 cup Pelleted food (Zupreem, Kaytee, etc... pellets only!)
1/4 cup Dried/Frozen/Fresh Fruit OR Vegetable. (I used Craisins last time)
Optional: 1 Tablespoon of Kaytee "Eggcite" or some filed off Cuttlebone dust. Keep ingredients somewhat small so you can blend it together and give the bread space to bake! Don't overwhelm the batter with ingredients... lol!
----------------------------------------
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Combine all Ingredients directly into mixing bowl and stir.
- Pour contents into a 9x9 baking pan (or 8x8)
- Smooth it out evenly... it will be shallow
- Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes... I like it crispier so I usually go for 20 minutes
Want to jazz it up? When you remove it from the oven, you can smear a thin, thin layer of Peanut Butter over the top of it. The peanut butter will melt and almost appear to be a "glaze" on the bread. Feel free to scrape cuttle-bone dust over this while the bread is cooling
Want to save it for later? You can make these in an 8x8 or 9x9 pan and let them cool out of the oven. Wait until it is completely cool, remove the bread as ONE PIECE (do not pre-cut) and slide it into a freezer bag in the gallon size. It will fit perfectly and stack well in your freezer. When you take it out, I recommend letting it thaw and then putting it in the oven for 5-10 minutes at 350 to warm it up again (and then you can slather the thin layer of peanut butter on it if you wish!)
Cut it up! I cut mine into small cubes or small rectangles. Then I toss them all in a bag and put them in the fridge.
But I don't have _____! If you do not have pelleted food.... then just add 1/2 cup more of some sort of fruit or vegetable. Be mindful that frozen fruit tends to retain more water... so if you add frozen strawberries your bread might not only be pink... but a bit waterier. If you do not have dried/fresh/frozen fruits or vegetables then just add a bit more pellets.
I hope this has been helpful to someone... anyone... or at least a fun read. Here's a picture of Khepri enjoying a piece for herself:
Enjoy!
